This position is located in the Railroad Retirement Board's Office of Programs; Unemployment & Program Support Division. The incumbent will be responsible for providing claims and clerical assistance for the Sickness & Unemployment Benefits Section.

This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by the Council of AFGE Locals in the Board.
Duties
As a Claims Assistant (Sickness), you will:
Contact claimants either in writing or by telephone to resolve discrepancies and conflicting information to assist in the adjudication of sickness claims.
Adjudicate and process less complex correspondence received from claimants including but not limited to direct deposit and tax withholding information.
Utilize a variety of mainframe and PC programs, analyze and evaluate different data to develop and provide information and advice to a variety of different sources including but not limited to supplemental insurance companies, railroads and/or claimants.
Respond to requests for medical information received from attorneys, insurance companies, third-party companies, railroads, and claimants.
Perform a variety of clerical duties including but not limited to scanning, indexing, batching, and/or mail/computer output delivery.

- Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation
- May be required to successfully complete a probationary period

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
For Grade GS-05:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level.
Specialized experience is defined as work experience that involved performing a wide variety of clerical and administrative office duties.

Four years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
-OR-
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
For Grade GS-06:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level.
Specialized experience is defined as experience that involves examining, developing, investigating claims for insurance benefits, and performing searches of records.
There is no education substitution for this position at the GS-06 level.
Only experience and education obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
