This position serves as the Painter for the New York Harbor, NY VA Medical Center. The Incumbent is responsible for applying paint with brush and spray gun to interior/exterior surfaces of the hospital buildings. These surfaces include sheet metal, structural, steel, wood trim, masonry walls, pipe, metal railing, doors, etc. where appearance and weather is important.

Duties

Duties include and are not limited to: Repair cracks in masonry, deteriorated caulking compounds and other materials to assure surfaces are prepared to receive paint or wall covering. Construct, install, prepare and repair walls and ceilings involving different architecture. Install vinyl, yarn type, construction and face wall covering. Interprets instructions to complete repairs according to work orders. Explores probable reasons for wall/paint/material/product failures or damage and determines correct specifications for corrections. Applies products and materials according to manufacturers' instructions and specifications. Mixes all painting materials to ensure uniformity of color, complete dispersion of pigment and uniform composition. May have to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel and work in uncomfortable positions. Knowledge on how to cut, stencil, painting signs and blending and mixing colors. Selects and uses the proper equipment and tools such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, compressors, scraper, straight edges, scaffold and ladders. Apply knowledge of spray compressors, nozzle's and all related spraying equipment. Experienced with all types of paints and related components of crafts required to accomplish assigned duties, such as water, rubber alkyd base, oils, enamels, varnishes, epoxy and paint removers. Embosses signs, paints traffic lines and directional signs by lettering or stencil, paint boundary fences, light posts and fire hydrants. Paints and refinishing furniture, wood and metal, such as desk cabinets, chairs, operating room and laundry equipment. Knows how to redecorate offices, wards, corridors, dining halls, living quarters, and shop buildings. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical Requirements: Paints, repairs, and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Occasionally, lift and carry items that weigh over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Perform work while wearing a respirator or other breathing apparatus. Working inside and outside in cold and warm temperatures are necessary.
