Medical Instrument Technician EKG arc primarily responsible to perform, operate, monitor. evaluate. and analyze complex non-invasive cardiac related procedures and results. In order to perform as an EKG Technician. the incumbent must have acquired some critical elements that include technical and analytical judgment through formal education in order to be able to identify life-threatening condition. which include identification of arrhythmias,

Duties

Major duties but not limited: Proficient in performing various procedures and be familiar with their indications contraindications and limitations. These procedures include, obtain blood pressure using Electronic Blood Pressure Machine, Stress Test. Electrocardiogram. Holter Monitor, Event Monitor. Assist in the following procedures, Tilt Table Monitoring Stress Echocardiogram and other cardiac related procedures. Recognize potentially critical arrhythmias from the electrocardiogram. take appropriates actions and when to get the immediate attention of the physician, when to stop the procedures and initiate emergency actions when indicated. Possess proper judgment. knowledge and skills to identify. call for emergency codes and when necessary assist in the cardiopulmonary resuscitation process. Skills to recognize and take initial action and assist the physician in emergencies and transport the patient to the emergency room for proper treatment.. Perform a variety of technical procedure m an independently manner using own judgment and initiative. Supports physicians. students, or medical professionals in using diagnostic instruments, equipment, and accessories. Serves as mentor preceptor to entry level MIT EKG employees. Assists during procedure by monitoring patient 's condition and collects information such as vital signs. EKG fi-om the patient p1ior to the procedure and records information. Demonstrate tactful verbal communication with staff, personnel, patients and visitors. Broad knowledge and understanding of heart anatomy and physiology. Identify cardiac structures (such as heart chambers, valves, coronary arteries, and conduction system structures). Check the EKG machines for correct standardization and electrical interference or mechanically produced artifacts. Troubleshoots the EKG equipment and report any problem. Utilized to evaluate arrhythmias, abnormalities, acute ischemia, and myocardial infractions among other conditions and diseases. Must be able to recognize conduction abnormalities: signs and symptoms of distress. myocardial infarction and other life-threatening conditions. Performs EKG procedures on both outpatient and inpatient including critically will patients and very difficult studies in areas such as: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MlCU). He /she perfo1ms EKG procedures on both outpatient and inpatient including critically ill patients and very difficult studies in areas such as: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MlCL ), Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). lntem1ediate Surgical Care Unit (ISCL). Coronary Care Unit (CCU), Intermediate Coronary Care Unit (lCCU). Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PAICU), and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (CCL). Prepares patient's chest and attaches electrodes to the 24 or 48 hour? Holter monitoring device so as to obtain optimum quality study. Explains the procedure to the patient and gives instructions for keeping the diary. When the patient returns on the next day, removes device and takes brief history. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policy Licensure or Certification Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-08: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which provided knowledge of advanced specialized procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): 1. Knowledge of pharmacology related to specialized procedures. 2. Ability to provide briefings and orientations to hospital staff including physicians. 3. Knowledge of a variety of related acute disorders and diseases, their effects on organs, and methods of treatment. 4. Ability to perform more complex procedures such as SAECG (Signal Averaged ECG), Tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring. *5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. *6. Ability to manage and supervise employees. Certification. No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications. Preferred Experience: 1 year of experience in Holter, EKG and GXT, Loop monitor recorder. Formal education in order to be able to identify life-threatening condition which include identification of arrhythmias, conduction abnormalities and pathologies. Knowledge of Dobutamine Echocardiogram, Stress Eco, Tilt Table Test (Head Up Tilt Test) References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/54 & 15, PART II, APPENDIX G27 The above the full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08 Physical Requirements: The majority of the work is sedentary, but can involve walking, pushing, bending, standing, moderate lifting and carrying light items such as books, files and supplies as needed.
