Are you interested in a rewarding and challenging opportunity? Join the U.S. Department of Justice! The Complaint Adjudication Office (CAO) is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Attorney Adviser.

Duties

As an Attorney Advisor for the Complaint Adjudication Office (CAO) section, you will: Prepare draft final decisions in EEO cases brought before the Department of Justice. In doing so, you will thoroughly review the investigative record and appropriately analyzes each of the issues presented, applying relevant law to the facts of a given case. Make a recommendation to his/her supervisors as to whether actionable discrimination or retaliation occurred. Prepare a draft final decision, you may also be required to assess the adequacy of the investigative record and determine whether additional information is required, draft memorandum to one or more parties on behalf of the Complaint Adjudication Officer to request additional information, and coordinate with the parties to ensure that the parties provide the additional information. Conduct legal research regarding relevant statutes, cases, and regulations, and use the research to support the legal conclusions in the draft final decisions. Compose timely, clear, and concise draft final decisions, summarizing the pertinent facts and explaining the reasons for the decision for each issue presented. Review lengthy, fact-intensive reports (ranging from 200 to 2000+ pages), and generate detailed, high-quality written work products weekly.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school, be an active member of the bar in good standing (any jurisdiction) and possess the minimum years of post-professional law degree experience commensurate to the grade level of eligibility, as shown below. Applicants also must have strong, demonstrated qualifications in the following areas: academic achievement; substantive knowledge and expertise in the laws, rules, and regulations applicable to the work of the section or substantially similar laws, rules, and regulations; written and oral communication skills; the ability to analyze complex issues; skill and experience working collaboratively and productively with others; organizational skills; professional judgment; initiative; and the ability to excel in a fast-paced, demanding environment. Applicants should have the ability to read voluminous reports, make challenging legal assessments, and compose outstanding written work products, all under significant time constraints. Applicants must be able to accept constructive criticism and adjust their work habits and writing preferences to meet the unusual requirements of this position. In addition, applicants must have outstanding professional references. Possessing the minimum post law degree legal experience does not guarantee the applicant will be selected at that grade level. GS-12 - minimum 1 year post-JD legal experience GS-13 - minimum 1.5 years post-JD legal experience GS-14 - minimum 2.5 years post-JD legal experience GS-15 - minimum 4 years post-JD legal experience Preferred Qualifications: The following demonstrated qualifications are preferred but not required: judicial clerkships (especially in federal court), law review, moot court, and/or clinical experience. It is also desirable for applicants to have skill and experience working cooperatively and productively with a range of people, such as charging parties, witnesses, respondents, disadvantaged or disenfranchised groups, opposing counsel, judicial or administrative officials, advocacy groups, law enforcement personnel, and the staff of other federal or state governmental agencies.
