This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Duties

The MIT Ultrasound Diagnostic position is in the Clinical Support ICC Imaging Service, Ultrasound Section at the Syracuse VAMC. The Syracuse VAMC is a tertiary care facility providing acute medical, surgical, rehabilitative, emergency, and intensive care/services; in addition to a vast array of outpatient specialty service, spinal cord injury center, and extensive primary care and specialty program/services. Diagnostic imaging services include state of the art Interventional Radiology (IR), Nuclear Medicine, MRI, Ultrasound, General Diagnostic Imaging with Special (Fluoroscopy) Procedures and CT scan capabilities. Gathers related information such as patient electronic chart, PACS images., so that correlation of examinations to other studies may be made by the radiologist in diagnosis and treatment recommendation for medical disorder(s). Performs complex vascular ultrasound examination of the abdomen, neck, chest and extremities for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical disorders. Makes multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments in operation of equipment to ensure accurate results. On the basis of radiologic findings, determines necessary ultrasonic procedures to yield definitive diagnostic findings. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. Edits and when necessary registers patients in the computerized VISTA system as well as the work list management portion of the HIS-RIS interface. Performs digital transfer of images from the various ultrasound imaging systems to the PACS. Assists quality assurance testing on the ultrasound unit to ensure peak performance of the ultrasound equipment and maintains quality assurance records. Performs housekeeping duties to assure the ultrasound area is clean and sanitary and uses aseptic techniques in examination process. A recruitment incentive is not authorized for Federal Employees. Federal employees may receive a relocation incentive if they're relocating more than 50 miles. Note: On-call pay may be authorized. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday: 8 am to 4:30 pm. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Citizenship of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-9. In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-8 full performance level, positions at this grade may be lead, supervisory, or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments. Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to fully perform all vascular ultrasound tests and examinations and to function as a technical director of the vascular laboratory and provide oversight and/or guidance to other technicians. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to vascular ultrasonography. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. (c) Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable. (d) Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. References: VA Handbook 5005/54, Part 2, Appendix G27. The full performance level of this vacancy is at the GS-9 level. Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: This position requires physical demands on the back and shoulder at times to achieve imaging profiles of organs using various angles of attack around the patient required for each exam. Patient lifting, and positioning is required to achieve completion of the exam.
