Electrician is responsible for performing preventive maintenance and repairs to buildings, building electrical equipment and systems. Plans and lay out the work to be performed for critical, life safety equipment and systems. Must be able to prepare electrical diagrams in planning and laying out work. Tasks are more complex in nature and require a broad knowledge of equipment and systems.

Duties

Installs new electrical service and repair existing electrical service and electrical systems. Uses building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and M&O electrical manuals to plan and lay out electrical service and systems that serve the entire Medical Center. Works closely with Supervisors or Projects Engineers on all new installations, in? house projects, inspection and review of project blueprints, inspection of contractor submittals, inspection of all contracted project work and work sites, and review of new equipment and material submitted by vendors. Troubleshoots the Medical Center's fire alarm system modules, power supplies (primary and emergency), and smoke detectors. Maintains the Medical Center's nurse call system. This is a networked computer system that integrates the 80+ bed stations, Code Blue call stations located throughout the hospital, and Patient Wandering emergency system.systems, electrical transfer switches, and (11) emergency generators. Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The work requires frequently lifting and carrying of tools, equipment and parts that weight up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds. The work is performed both inside and outside. The electrician is sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather and work in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 feet or more and in close quarters such as manholes and attics. There is exposure to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and injuries from rotary devices such as electrical motors and is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Work Environment: The position may at times involve exposure to a work environment that may include intermittent excessive noise, dust, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around moving objects or vehicles. The incumbent may also be exposed to infective patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders; Emotional and Mental Stability: The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.
