This position requires ALL of the following: A valid current Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Passenger (P) Endorsement on your CDL Located within the Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Montrose, NY, the Motor Vehicle Operator provides transportation assistance to the medical center. This is a dual campus position, requiring work out of both the Montrose and Castle Point Campuses.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Operates a variety of gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds and up to 32,000 pounds (to include cargo vans, trucks, wheelchair van, and buses, etc.) Determines route to be followed, taking into consideration such factors as ongoing hospital activities, weight limitations, and safety conditions Transports patients and family members, supplies, materials, or equipment throughout the medical center complex and the local public area Assures vehicle is not overloaded Performs required operator maintenance Maintains service records, completes delivery records, trip tickets, and compiles accident reports Loads and unloads crated equipment, supplies, and parts from vehicles Uncrates material as necessary and checks, counts, sorts materials, stocks and palletizes material, etc. Operates a forklift truck (of up to 10,000 or more pound capacity) Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY appointment (not-to-exceed 1 year). This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year. Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Light physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning, or moving arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls of motor vehicles. Physical effort is exerted in operating, turning, backing, and controlling heavier vehicles. The work of this position requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time; bending, stooping, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 pounds or more. Heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from others. Forklift operation requires moderate physical effort in operating hand and foot. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1).
