The VA New Jersey Healthcare System Medical Administrative Service is currently recruiting for three (3) Escort position, one position is located in East Orange, NJ and two positions are located in Lyons, NJ. The incumbent is assigned to the mobile care unit of the Medical Administration Service and is responsible for the safe and efficient transport of patients (to/from appointments) that are ambulatory, in wheelchairs, stretchers, medical bed, or other transport equipment.

Duties

The incumbent transports patients in the nursing home/inpatient wards to and from appointments. He/she may also assist patients who need help walking. The incumbent: Is responsible for checking each patient's name band prior to escorting the patient to ensure proper patient identification. Accurately annotates transport information. Raises or lowers stretchers, wheelchairs and medical beds to heights appropriate for transport. Provides and adjusts escort equipment for safety and comfort of the patient (i.e. appropriate linen, side rails). Assists patients onto escort equipment. Ensures patients have the proper center of gravity on wheelchairs, stretchers, or medical beds. Asks patient care staff to assist if patients need additional help. Is responsible for notifying Nursing or ancillary personnel upon arrival or departure of patients. Communicates with Nursing staff of any changes in the patient during transporting. Uses convex mirrors in hallways to safely navigate around corners. Assists with events that are scheduled for the CLC residents. Assists and supports the Nursing staff. Answers dispatch requests through fax or phone calls. Provides information and directions to hospital guests, visitors and patients. Is required to disinfect /wipe down equipment with approved cleaning products between patient transports. Shows ownership over escort equipment, including routine cleaning, linen dressing and minor maintenance. May transport laboratory specimens when requested by supervisor. Work Schedule: East Orange, NJ: M-F, 8am - 4:30pm. Lyons, NJ: M-F, 5am - 1:30pm; 7am - 3:30pm; 9am - 5:30pm rotating shifts. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work performed requires continuous standing, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting and pushing. Incumbent is required to push and pull wheelchair and other equipment weighing up to 400 pounds; required to push and pull beds and equipment, with assistance, weighing up to 1000 pounds and also required to lift and transfer, with assistance, patients to and from beds weighing up to 600 pounds.
