About the Position: This position is located at the Albany Field Office, Operations Division. The incumbent performs work that is characteristic of a variety of trades and labor occupations in order to repair, modify, and maintain the lock and dam machinery, floating plant equipment and machinery, and engineering equipment. Work may be performed at the Albany Field Office and Troy Lock and Dam reservation, or at other remote locations where floating plant or engineering equipment is working.
Duties
Perform work that is characteristic of a variety of trades in order to repair, modify, and maintain the lock and dam machinery, floating plant equipment and machinery, and engineering equipment.
Disassemble, repair, and reassemble hydraulic pumps, air compressors, valves, controllers, etc.
Fabricate lock and dam parts and required items in the maintenance shop.
Troubleshoot, repair, modify, and maintain floating plant including towboats, barges, work boats, skiffs, outboard motors, etc.
Repair and maintain engineering and industrial type equipment (i.e. pay loaders, mobile cranes, tractors, hoists, heavy trucks, air compressors, engine-generators, gasoline engines and electric driven pumps, accessory equipment and attachments).
Operate various equipment including 0.5 ton to 10 ton trucks.
Maintain Preventative Maintenance (PM) records for all project equipment requiring maintenance services.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid state issued driver?s license.
- Must obtain and maintain a USACE certification for operation of a small boats (less than 26 feet) within 12 months.
- Must obtain and maintain a current Commercial Operators License (CDL) for New York State within 12 months.
- Business related travel is 10% annually.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Work in extreme weather conditions.
- Must wear protective clothing or equipment as the particular situation requires such as hard hats, rubber boots, gloves, safety glasses, safety vest, safety shoes, goggles, ear muffs, life jacket, or other personal floatation device.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a General Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision, to include: perform common repairs, maintenance and modification to lock and dam machinery, floating plant equipment and machinery (i.e. towboats, barges, work boats, skiffs, outboard motors, etc.), various engineering and mechanical equipment (i.e. pay loaders, mobile cranes, tractors, hoists, heavy trucks, air compressors, engine-generators, gasoline engines and electric driven pumps, etc.), and operates various equipment including 0.5 ton to 10 ton trucks. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Efforts: The work requires continual physical effort while performing lock, channel, building, and equipment maintenance activities. The employee uses physical effort carrying/using tools, performing rigging/lifting operations, and handling various components and equipment. Eye and hand coordination are required to operate various controls and handling lines while observing traffic and personnel, during crane lifting operations, lifting dam gates, etc. There is standing, stooping, bending, occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds, stretching, working in cramped positions and spaces, handling or maneuvering bulky items or equipment, and general continuous moderate to arduous physical effort required.
Working Conditions: Some assignments are performed in a shop situation where the incumbent is subject to loud equipment and repair noises and cuts and abrasions from the use of hand power tools. Field assignments involves working from high lock and dam structures using adequate safety controls and devices and working over or around bodies of water requiring goggles, hard hat, life preserver, etc. Outside work subjects the incumbent to temperature and weather extremes. Typically works on parts or equipment that is dirty, oily and greasy in cramped, tiring and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time.
