The Lead Dental Assistant performs a higher level, scope, complexity, and variety of dental assisting duties representing the clinical assignment and applies advanced clinical skills.

Duties

Major Duties and Responsibilities: The Lead Dental Assistant works with the supervisor or Chief Dental Service at the Beckley VAMC to monitor and make work assignments, provide input on performance, resolve daily workplace issues, and maintain efficient flow of patient care; may approve brief periods of leave, provide training to staff dental assistants, students and/or trainees. Serves in staff dental assistant positions independently performing more complex work in assigned specialties in lead dental assistant positions.. Leads a team of employees performing at the GS-7 level or below. Coordinates daily dental assistant work assignments at the start of the shift and throughout the day as the need arises. Monitors function of dental equipment and requests repair or replacement. Serve as staff dental assistants at the full performance level for routine patient care and performs a full range of duties with indirect supervision from the lead or supervisory dental assistant or the treating dentist. Performs assigned selected procedures with independence. The Dental Assistant assists the dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision. Makes written instructions, reference materials, and relevant background material available. Serves as a liaison between the scheduler and the dentist to maintain efficient and productive use of the dentists' patient care time and minimize missed opportunities. Maintains current knowledge and answers questions from team members on procedures, policies, and directives. Organizes and maintains Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Lead Dental Assistant must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: Must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements you must demonstrate that you possess one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-06). References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G 36- Title 38 Hybrid Qualifications Standards The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-7. Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs. and over); Moderate Carrying (15-44 lbs.);Straight Pulling (up to 2 hours); Pushing (up to 2 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Walking (up to 8 hours); Standing (up to 8 hours); Repeated bending (up to 2 hours); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16";Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and 20/100 in the other; Good distance Vision; Depth Perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted).
