This position is a Biologist, GS- 0401-9 working in AJO, AZ for the R2-Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. This is a term position expected to last 13 months but may be extended up to a total of 4 years at management's discretion.

Duties

As a Biologist your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Proposes, designs and conducts biological, wildlife and habitat projects on public and privately-owned lands with an emphasis on restoration, enhancement and management of native and threatened and endangered species. Works with the land managers and landowners to obtain approvals, completes the necessary documents (e.g., agreements, permits) and successfully oversees projects. Uses standard techniques to collect biological data concerning fish and wildlife and habitats. Refines databases for data compilation and keeps current. Enters and accesses data in software programs (e.g., GIS, Excel), analyzes data using statistical and database software. Writes reports to evaluate findings and make recommendations to benefit fish and wildlife, presents results in technical meetings and in peer-reviewed literature. Provides technical support in inventories and evaluation of habitat conditions and needs for unique, rare, endangered and threatened species. Makes recommendations for habitat protection or improvements. Participates in interdisciplinary teams for evaluating the impacts of Refuge and non-Refuge activities on System Lands. Prepares management plans and other necessary documents to ensure preservation, protection and enhancement of fish and wildlife populations and habitat. Assesses and evaluates methods used for fish and wildlife management, restoration and enhancement to assure methods are efficient, selective, and based on sound biological and ecological principles. Plans and conducts investigations of moderate complexity to determine population trends, patterns in reproductive success, timing of natural history events, and other demographic parameters of a suite of indicator species. Prepares and reviews biological portions of environmental assessment/impact statements or comprehensive resource planning reports to evaluate environmental consequences of proposed actions on Federal fish and wildlife resources of concern. As directed, delivers technical presentations to other agencies, organizations, conservation districts, wildlife clubs, and community groups; works with print, radio, and television media to promote local Service initiatives. Establishes, and maintains cooperative, working relationships with partners, including government agencies, Tribal entities, conservation organizations, local community groups, individual farmers and ranchers, and stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Coordinates and integrates with other Service programs and offices within the local area of responsibility. Helps train and supervise lower grade employees and volunteers engaged in technical work and assists in public outreach efforts.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 08/18/2023 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification. Basic Requirement: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline related to this position. OR An appropriate combination of education and experience that included course work equivalent to a major (i.e. 24 semester hours) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline related to this position; PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four year course of study with a major as described above. Minimum Qualification [GS-9} I possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position and that is typically in or related to the work of this position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience may include: 1) Assists with designs and conducts biological, wildlife and habitat projects on public lands and privately-owned lands; 2) Helps provide technical support in inventories and evaluation of habitat conditions and needs for wildlife and plants; 3) Assists with planning and conducting investigations of moderate complexity to determine population trends, timing of natural history events, and other demographic parameters in regards to various species; 4) Assists in preparing and reviewing biological portions of environmental assessments/impact statements or comprehensive resource planning reports. I have completed two years of progressively higher-level graduate education at an accredited college or university leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in fish and/or wildlife biology, ecology, or a directly related field appropriate to this position. I possess an equivalent combination of professional experience and graduate level education beyond the first year which together equals 100% of the requirements. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient detail, e.g., begin/end dates, hours worked per week, duties performed, etc. for each timeframe for consideration. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
