This position is located at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (VAMC), Chicago, IL. (537) - a Level 1b Complexity VAMC Facility and is organizationally aligned under the Engineering Service Line. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of the variety of trades and their related structures, fixtures, and utilities. The incumbent is under the supervision of the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor.

Duties

The position is located within the Environment of Care (EOC) Section of the Maintenance and Operations area of Engineering Service. The incumbent is a Lead Maintenance Mechanic over multiple Maintenance Mechanics WG-4749-10 (14). The incumbent performs a variety of assignments as a working leader. EOC shop is responsible for working on EOC deficiencies throughout the medical center and other JBVAMC owned properties. Approximately 1 million square feet require maintenance. The incumbent passes on to other workers the instruction received from his supervisor and gets work started. The incumbent works along with other workers and sets a good and safe rate of production to assure good quality and good quantity in the jobs completed and within estimated job time. The incumbent is required to demonstrate proper and new methods of job completion for other maintenance mechanics that may need or may be receiving training. Incumbent supports and promotes all mandated programs, such as Employee Health and Safety, Environment of Care, Emergency Management, Green Environmental Management Systems (GEMS), Infection Control, Energy, and VA Construction Standards, Guidelines, and Specifications utilizing VA construction documentation and reporting protocols. Ensures compliance with area of responsibility for Joint Commission, NFPA, NEC, OSHA, VHA and all applicable healthcare standards and life safety codes. The incumbent is required to keep the Maintenance Mechanic Shop supervisor informed of job progress, completion time, etc. It is also a part of the incumbent's job to ensure that other workers are informed of job deadlines and that deadlines are met in a safe manner. The incumbent distributes the work to assure the maintenance mechanic crew is busy. The incumbent must select the proper tools and materials to expedite good and safe job results. In case of an emergency, either during duty hours, or before and after normal hours, the incumbent will perform tasks as assigned by the supervisors. The incumbent enforces quality and quantity standards of customer relations. The incumbent may be assigned other duties and required to fulfill the mission of Engineering Service. In the absence of the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, the incumbent may be required to perform those duties. Maintains current knowledge and answers workers questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (e.g., technical orders). Incumbent is guided by federal, state, and VA regulations, engineering principles and trade practices, and governing codes. Technical manuals, information bulletins, texts, handbooks, technical magazines, manufactures' literature, etc., are used advantageously in fulfilling duties and keeping current with new engineering/trade method and regulatory and code changes. Preferred Experience: At least 5 years of experience in Carpentry, Electrical and Plumbing. Physical Requirements: The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts weighing up to 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed both in and outdoors, often being dusty, greasy, and dirty. There is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness such as high noise levels, high or low temperatures, or adverse weather. The incumbent will work in poorly ventilated areas, hot spots, cold spots, and very cramped quarters. The incumbent may wear protective clothing and other personal protective equipment. The incumbent must observe all safety rules and precautions as there is a continued susceptibility to cuts, falls, bruises, and hazards to skin and eyes.
