These positions are located on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, in Springerville, AZ and Overgaard, AZ.
Operates treatment facilities and all phases of water systems testing and maintenance, and operates primary and secondary sewage disposal plant equipment used to collect, treat, and dispose of waterborne domestic waste, and related domestic water system.

Duties
Monitor gauges, meters, pumps, chemical feeders, auxiliary generators, and recording and controlling devices according to a prescribed schedule and perform routine operator maintenance.
Perform minor preventative maintenance on chemical feeders, pumping stations, and other equipment.
Perform water treatment tests to check pH level, turbidity, fluoride, and chloride content.
Add silicates and chemical agents to carbonate, ammoniate, fluoridate, and chlorinate water as needed.
Data entry into a computer database and conducting tests and measurements within prescribed State and Federal standards.
Provide pretreatment, primary treatment, and secondary treatment of influent and effluent.
Collect water samples and perform extensive tests in order to determine biochemical oxygen demand, suspended and dissolved solids, and dissolved oxygen and acidity.
Increase or decrease chemical agents based upon results of performed tests; adjusting rate of flow and amount of chemicals to be fed into system.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
- Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.

- Must possess a valid state drivers license as the operation of a government vehicle is required for traveling to and from work site, hauling supplies, and check pumping stations, etc.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Water Treatment Level 1 Certification within 2 years of the effective date of appointment.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Water Distribution Level 1 Certification within 2 years of the effective date of appointment.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid a Wastewater Treatment Level 2 Certification within 2 years of the effective date of appointment.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Wastewater Collection Level 1 Certification within 2 years of the effective date of appointment.

There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, the applicant must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials that they possess the skill level that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of Utility Systems Operator without more than normal supervision.
