About the Position: This position is a Medical Support Assistant,GS-0679-05, at Army Medical Center Beaumont located in Fort Bliss, Texas
Duties
Picks up ward report each day.
At time of admission completes insurance form (DD 2569) and secures patient's signature for assignment of benefits and release of information.
Maintains an accurate Active Duty Patient Accountability report (ADPAR).
Analyzes computer accounting of patients on each ward and determines discrepancies.
Maintains related files, alpha roster, and cross references index ensuring adequate controls are taken to prevent the loss of records or unauthorized access.
Interviews patients, their sponsor, or other knowledgeable person to initiate inpatient records for all patients admitted into the facility.
Assigns temporary identification code when social security number is unknown or not available.
Clears all patients being discharged or transferred to another hospital, prepares patient clearance record and sends to treasury office. Prepares releases of information for patients.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes demonstrated experience performing work such as receptionist, recordkeeping, clerical, and administrative support functions that provided you with the knowledge of clinical procedures involving patient care that included duties such as receiving patients, scheduling appointments; maintaining charts, files, or records; providing information to patients, professional medical staff, and the general public and utilizing a personal computer and office automation software programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
