Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a variety of legal assistance and office support services in support of Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs). Typical work assignments will include: Providing substantive assistance to attorneys in matters related to complex investigations and prosecutions of child exploitation cases, domestic and international human trafficking cases, violent crimes, ant other death-penalty eligible offenses. This includes assistance with unique international and cross-State jurisdictional challenges to support significant reactive cases and long-term historical and proactive investigations wherein the legal issues encountered may include the use of specialized investigative tools. Acting as a legal assistance subject matter expert with complex special prosecution matters and providing guidance to other legal assistants in specific tasks, reference materials, and policy. Preparing a wide variety of voluminous and complex legal documents and actions. Conducting non-complex research of legislation, statutes, regulations, and court cases related to the legal specialty area of special prosecutions. Aiding in the preparation and organization of evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial. Maintaining calendar of assigned active cases, to include tracking filing, hearing, and trial dates, as well as scheduling conferences and interviews. Arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in federal service. Specialized experience is defined as performing legal support work associated with the specialty area of law (i.e. special prosecutions such as child exploitation cases, domestic and international human trafficking cases, or violent crimes) by examining, preparing, and processing legal documents; verifying citations or statutory references; using software applications to produce reports and documents; and tracking case statuses. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)-The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your Department of Justice component has notified you in writing that you are a surplus or displaced employee eligible for CTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your CTAP eligibility, 2) you apply under the instructions in this announcement, and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.
