This permanent Career Seasonal position is located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, in the Facilities Management Division.
Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. It is anticipated that non-pay status will be during the month of January for a minimum of 2 weeks.
Duties
As the Maintenance Worker Leader (Trails) you will assist the Trails Supervisor in short term planning of trail maintenance, construction, and rehabilitation trail projects. You will lead a trail crew up to ten individuals. You must have a complete knowledge of trail construction and maintenance techniques and must be able to recognize existing and future maintenance problems. You must be knowledgeable in the analysis of drainage patterns and the subsequent control methods. Additional duties consist of but are not limited to:
Select corrective actions to trail repairs by estimating time, materials, logistical tactics and equipment needed.
Purchase safety gear and materials, coordinate vehicle and equipment use, coordinate resource monitoring & schedule helicopter flights to remote areas of the park.
Responsible for day-to-day on-site decisions concerning workflow assignment and distribution of work for crew.
Teach and demonstrate proper trail maintenance and construction methods and techniques to crews and volunteers and set the work pace.
Communicate procedures, policies, written instructions, and safety procedures to the crew.
Facilitate safety "tailgate sessions" whenever necessary, especially when initiating a new task or operating specialized equipment.
Inspect all assigned equipment and vehicles on a regular and recurring basis to assure safe working conditions.
Keep supervisor informed of status and progress of work, causes of work delays, and any personnel issues.
Overnight travel maybe required for both backcountry and regular travel for up to twenty days a month.
Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail construction and maintenance. As examples of typical strenuous activity, the incumbent frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 90 lbs. unassisted and with assistance of objects over 100 lbs.; must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars or rigging, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovels and other hand tools extensively. The incumbent must continuously be bending, reaching, stooping, pushing, and pulling objects, sometimes in unison with other members of the crew. Frequently hikes up to fifteen miles daily and must be able to do so while carrying up to fifty pounds in a backpack and carrying power and/or hand tools. All OSHA and RM50B safety practices will be adhered to, including wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Working Conditions:Temperature extremes encountered from 90-110 degrees F in Summer, and 20 to 60 degrees F in Winter. Terrain is steep, eroded, and rocky with unstable footing in order to reach most trail side job sites, which can range from one to fifteen miles in a day. Must have the ability to live and work in remote backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. This may require living and working out of a wilderness camp for up to 16 days a month. Must live and work outdoors on projects in mountainous, jungle, coastal and desert terrain at elevations between sea level and 13,678 feet in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, falling and bucking trees, and working around rigging equipment and machinery.
For more area information, see "find a park". Special Consideration: The island of Hawaii is subject to high concentrations of volcanic fumes, especially sulfur dioxide gasses. The fumes are known to be hazardous to an unborn fetus, and persons with heart and respiratory problems. The Kona coast experiences fog conditions throughout the year. Long-term effects on normal healthy persons is unknown.
