This position is located In the Division of Interpretation & Education. The purpose of this position is to teach environmental education programs via distance learning channels, through both established and newly developed environmental education programs primarily for school, youth, and other organized groups to students throughout United States. The position also leads on-site educational programs for pre-K through 12th grade students, and should be comfortable working with young children.

Duties

Conducts basic research of topics for the purpose of providing environmental education programs. This position spends a majority of time modifying, developing, and delivering curriculum-based environmental education programs via distance learning to schools and educational groups throughout the United States. Leads on-site environmental educational programs for pre-K through 12th grade students or home-school equivalent. The employee is responsible for following established curriculum objectives in a manner that is age-appropriate for the audience. Specifically, when programs are written for a range of grades, the employee uses simpler language and more concrete explanations of concepts for younger students. Researches and develops curriculum under the direction of the GS-09 Park Ranger (Interpretation) to meet the needs of the intended audience. Leads cave tours of up to 40 people on developed cave trails. Provides information and orientation to visitors about the park's resources and services and collects tour fees as necessary. Physical Demands: The work involves extensive periods of sitting, standing and walking, in some cases over uneven surfaces or inclines including up to 450 stairs, carrying backpacks, etc. Occasional travel to the elevator building "penthouse" to troubleshoot elevator equipment is required. This equipment can only be accessed by climbing a vertical three-story metal rung ladder. Work responsibilities require occasional heavy lifting, strenuous periods of walking, long periods of standing or sitting, and working in sometimes harsh environmental conditions of wind, cold, rain, snow, heat, and humidity. Working Conditions: Work is mostly performed in an indoor setting with occasional periods outdoors and regular work within a cave environment. Occasional exposure to outdoor temperatures including temperatures below freezing. Cave temperature is a consistent 54 degrees F with about 95% humidity. The cave tour routes include up to 450 stairs and are dimly lit, requiring frequent ducking or stooping. Work Is performed In an adequately lighted and climate controlled office as well as in the field. Office work will require the ability to sit for extended periods of time working at a computer.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/11/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: Possess three years of general experience one of which was equivalent to at least the GS-04 level. General experience is progressively responsible experience (1 year of which was equivalent to at least GS-4), that demonstrates the ability to: Analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; Plan and organize work; and Communicate effectively orally and in writing. This experience may have been gained in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work. Experience in substantive and relevant secretarial, clerical, or other responsible work may be qualifying as long as it you provide evidence of the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) necessary to perform the duties of this position. Experience of a general clerical nature (typing, filing, routine procedural processing, maintaining records, or other nonspecialized tasks) is not creditable. Trades or crafts experience appropriate to the position to be filled may be creditable for some positions. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Have four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree. IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must document your course work and/or degree completed in your resume or other application materials you submit. You must submit a copy of your transcripts or a complete list of college courses taken that identifies for each course the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade received, and date completed. If you are qualifying based on education and you do not submit specific course work information as described previously, your application will be rated not qualified for consideration. (A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected). You must include transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, I have 2 years of general experience and 45 semester hours of qualifying education. The applicant meets 67 percent of the required experience and 38 percent of the required education. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
