The position is at the full performance level located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, Dental Service. The primary purpose of the Dental Laboratory Technician provides completion and assignment of workload in a manner consistent with skills of technicians and needs of staff dentists.
Duties

The Dental Laboratory Technician directly collaborates withall Post Graduate Trainees, Staff Dentists including both general and specialist dentists to design and fabricate complex dental or intra-oral maxillofacial appliances. This involves developing the design of the appliance, personally fabricating, or overseeing the fabrication of the appliance, and resolving problems in its fabrication. Such assignments require a very thorough knowledge of oral anatomy, tooth morphology and dentition, a thorough knowledge of laboratory materials, tools, and equipment, and a very high degree of skill in their use.
The Dental laboratory technician does digital Scanning, designing of prosthesis, and milling using equipment and materials as provided. This includes fixed and removable appliances, and other treatment needs of staff dentists.
The employee performs and conducts material testing for the Prosthetic Laboratory Director who is a Board-Certified Prosthodontist. This laboratory dental material testing determines the efficacy of possible materials that can or will maximize and optimize laboratory processes. The incumbent will plan and conduct classroom and or laboratory instruction for dental clinicians, dental laboratory staff and auxiliary dental personnel.
The Dental Laboratory technician will work closely with Post Graduate Dental Training Program Directors to engage in teaching as assigned by Program Directors. Develops hands-on and didactic teaching materials (models, PowerPoint presentations) if needed. The Dental lab tech will propose and design dental models for illustrating the ways in how that model and its design affects oral functions and esthetics for use in instructing and planning for patient's needs.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (7:30 - 4:00pm)

Qualifications
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Do you possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-8, in federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. -OR-
EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Have you successfully completed 2 years of graduate education that is directly related to the work of this position as a Dental Lab Technician. NOTE TO APPLICANTS: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year of graduate study.
