Navy Child and Youth Programs (CYP) offers high quality early care and youth services in center-based (birth - five), facility-based (age 5-12), and recreational environments (teen; youth sports and fitness). The purpose of the Child and Youth Program Assistant Training & Curriculum Specialist is to assist the CYP Training Specialist in providing and delivering a comprehensive training program to CYP employees and Child Development Home providers.

Duties

The duties and responsibilities of the CYP Assistant Training Specialist cam be grouped into categories, including training, classroom and program support, compliance, and additional responsibilities as described below. Training Assists in the development of a CYP training plan and assists with identifying and addressing training needs. Assists with orientation training for new CYP employees and CDH providers. Assists in the execution of Standardized Module Training and completion of orientation, initial and ongoing annual training. Assists in maintaining training records and individual training plans and preparing training status reports. Assists in ensuring completion and documentation of required monthly training. Works with CYP Program Assistants to ensure modules are complete. Encourages and supports continuing higher education of employees and providers. Provides information about the Child Development Associate (CDA), the Military School-Age Credential (MSA) and higher level opportunities. Mentors employees in this effort. Classroom/Program Support Assists in supporting and implementing the required Navy curriculum to be used by CYP (i.e. supports implementation and execution of the Navy standardized curriculum within the Child Development Center (CDC), including assisting CY Program Assistants and Leaders by documenting observations and assessments, evaluating classroom environments, reviewing weekly activity plans, and providing additional training when needed). Assists in ensuring the quality and consistency of developmental programming to include environment, equipment, materials, program structure, curriculum, risk management practices and oversight and coordination of activity schedules and lesson plans. Assists in coordinating programming that supports the children and youth's physical, social/emotional, cognitive and language development regardless and setting or length of time in care. Completes monthly classroom observations and assists in providing feedback. Role models appropriate behaviors and techniques working with children and youth. Assist in selecting developmentally appropriate toys, materials and equipment. Helps maintain a resource file library to aid in preparing lesson plans and activity schedules and to assist with training objectives. Assists with the development and implementation of parent education and parent participation programs. Compliance Assists with the provision of training to employees to ensure classroom compliance with fire, safety and sanitation rules and regulations. Additional Responsibilities In the absence of the CYP Training Specialist, incumbent may assume Training Specialist responsibilities and perform duties and requirements of the position under the guidance of the CYP Director. Incumbent is a mandatory reporter to Family Advocacy and Child Protective Services as prescribed by local policy in the case of suspected incidences of child abuse and neglect. Performs other duties as asigned.

Requirements

  • Complete required training certificates, and maintain certifications or credentials required by Federal, State, and/or national accreditation institutions used as part of DoD's Child and Youth Programs.
  • Undergo pre-employment and random drug testing. A positive drug test, or failure to submit for testing, is a basis for removal from this position.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical, provide evidence of immunization, be free of all communicable diseases, and obtain appropriate immunization against communicable diseases.
  • Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided at time of application.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • Must meet federal suitability requirements including successful completion of background investigation.
  • May be required to work an uncommon tour including evening and weekend hours.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license, transport children, and/or attend field trips.

Qualifications

Knowledge, skill and ability to assist managing a developmentally appropriate program for the age groups served. Knowledge and background of child and youth programs including principles, practices and techniques of child and youth development. Knowledge of Federal and State laws governing the detection and prevention of child abuse and/or neglect. Knowledge of the NAEYC, COA and NAFCC accreditation criteria and process, the required programs of the BGCA, 4-H and the skills and knowledge to implement the Department of Defense (DoD) certification standards. Knowledge in interests and motivation of individuals and groups. Skill in planning, organizing and implementing a variety of programs. Skill to assist in developing curriculum outlines, courses of study lesson plans/guides and to conduct training workshops. Ability to provide guidance and leadership to employees and providers. Ability to assist in training employees on a variety of issues to include recognition and identification of childhood illnesses and child abuse, etc. Ability to assist in identifying and responding to emergency situations including evacuations, child illness and physical and emotional disorders. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, and possess strong interpersonal communication skills.

Education

**Must provide a copy of your H.S. Diploma, GED, or College Transcripts (showing degree awarded/conferred) when you apply.**

Child Development Associate (CDA), Military School-Age Credential (MSA) or equivalent AND 3 years of experience in the child and/or youth profession.

OR

A 2-year degree in Youth Development, Child Development or a related field, which can include Recreation, Youth Recreation, Physical Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Social Work, Home Economics with an emphasis in Human Development, or other
degrees as appropriate AND 2 years of full-time experience working with children and/or youth.

OR

A four-year degree or higher in these areas AND 1 year of full-time experience working with children and/or youth.

Note: If your degree has not been awarded and/or you possess certificates of completion for DoD approved competency-based training courses, and/or a valid CDA/MSA credential(s), you MUST also provide a copy of your HS Diploma or equivalent.
