About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency. It is located in the Behavioral Health Department, Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA. The primary purpose of the position is to screen, triage, and perform mental health intake evaluations to determine patient safety, providing professional insights at the direction of the provider and entering and updating patient care information.
Duties
Assist the Mental Health Department leadership and personnel on a wide variety of mental health projects and programs.
Perform mental health intake evaluations to determine patient safety.
Enter and update patient care information into electronic records systems.
Assist in the periodic and comprehensive review and development of departmental standard operating procedures.
Provide instruction and information briefings for other departments, clinics, commands, and the community.
Co-facilitate patient care programs, mental health related groups and activities with a licensed independent provider.
Distribute project and program information and resource to patients and staff.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- This position is covered by Health Affairs Policy 97006, 23 Oct 96 the position requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B immunizations and Tuberculin testing unless exempt by physician.
- This position requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification sponsored by the American Heart Association.

Basic Requirement for Program and Mental Health Specialist:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, such as social work, psychology, or behavioral health. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts for verification.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts for verification.)
OR
Experience: Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) assisting with performing mental health intake screenings to determine patient safety and appropriate program placement options, 2) performing a variety of administrative functions such as preparing correspondence, scheduling meetings, recording minutes and data collection, AND 3) utilizing electronic health record systems to enter and maintain patient care information. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as social science or behavioral science. OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
