This position is located in the Water Program, Engineering Section of the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs routine maintenance and repair of mechanical components associated with the public water system; Assists the water treatment operators by performing routine and moderately complex preventive maintenance tasks; Performs daily calibration of pH meters (measuring acidity and alkalinity), colorimeters, and other water quality testing equipment; Conducts testing of potable water for parameters such as pH, free chlorine concentrations, mixed and hot water bypass temperatures; Manipulates water fixture bypass valves to adjust temperatures and test hot water; Performs preventive maintenance on water monitoring equipment such as changing reagents and associated plumbing and tubing; Uses common plumbing tools and perform basic installation and removal of minor plumbing components such as inline filters, push to connect fittings, and shower heads as well as cartridge valves in sink fixtures; and Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday; 6:00am - 2:30pm OR Monday - Friday; 6:00am - 2:30pm, OR Tuesday - Saturday 6:00am - 2:30pm, OR Wednesday - Sunday 6:00am-2:30pm (Shift to be determined at time of selection) Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The duties require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, work from ladders, both in and outside the building, and crawling through restrictive areas. The incumbent must occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing fifty pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require him/her to stand, stoop, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work requires standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, often in hard to reach places. Incumbent frequently handles, lifts, carries equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. He/she is standing or walking much of the time and must be in good overall physical condition. Physical capability to regularly walk long distances, dexterity and accurate eye hand coordination, and corrected 20/20 vision and accurate color perception are required. The incumbent is exposed to extremes of heat and cold, dust, dirt, noise, grease, bad smelling fumes, and moisture, as well as outside the normal indoor environment of the hospital. The incumbent frequently works in areas which are extremely hot, cold or unventilated, and possible permitted and non-permitted confined spaces with appropriate training. The work environment may include crawl spaces and interstitial spaces. He/she may occasionally be exposed to disease, bad weather, possible electric shock, fall hazards, hand or power tools, and danger from flying splinters and chips, respiratory ailments. He/she may have frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, infections, cuts, and bruises. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
