The Surgical Technician (ST) is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team.

Duties

Surgical Technician Major Duties: The surgical technician (ST) is a member of the surgical team and provide assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The ST participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Major duties include but not limited to: Set up sterile field with all required items for each procedure, plans and discussed each procedure with surgical professionals. Assure all equipment and supplies are available, responsible for highly complex sterile surgical set ups, anticipates the needs of the surgeon/procedure, maintains high level of concentration for extended periods of time. Utilizes universal precautions while adhering to all infection control policies and procedures, handling of specimens. Assist team with positioning and prepping of patient, preforms sponge and instrument counts with the circulating registered nurse to verify accuracy, responsible for accountability of all surgical items/equipment during the procedure,. Transports patients, and assists with other duties and responsibilities for the unit. Maintains current BLS. Responsible to the Surgical Services Nurse Manager. Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with rotation of weekday/weekend/holiday Position Description Title/PD#: Surgical Technician/PD03773A Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting and repositioning patients or similar activities. The incumbent will be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 35 pounds frequently. The incumbent must be able to transport and transfer patients (e.g. stretcher to wheelchair, bed to stretcher, wheelchair to bed, etc.) safely. The incumbent will be required to handle equipment and must be knowledgeable of an able to use safe lifting techniques. The use of correct body mechanics required. The incumbent should also have the ability to identify the potential for safety hazards. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing (aid permitted), speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading, and logical thinking. Also, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16". The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace, requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials (1-2 hours at a time

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-7 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic technique to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery. Knowledge of sterile technique must include sterilizer operations and tests to determine the effectiveness of sterilization, packing, storage, and shelf life. Proper cleaning techniques and the types of detergents to use on various items, as well as proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies, handling of contaminated items, quality control and personal hygiene. In depth knowledge of universal precautions and know how to implement infections control policies and procedures. OR Education: Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. Preferred Experience: 2-3 years of operating room scrub tech experience. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Interpersonal Effectiveness. Customer Service Creative Thinking Organizational Awareness Technical competence Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
