Duties

Assisting in preparing, evaluating and conducting biological analysis of land and water resource projects. Working closely with and assisting senior specialist with coordinating and consulting with Tribal, State, special interest groups and other federal agencies. Serving on interdisciplinary teams where in collaboration with other specialists writes and reviews biological input to environmental assessments, biological assessments, and development of protective stipulations, and resource management plans. Participating in monitoring wildlife development projects by providing input to interdisciplinary reports, environmental assessments and protective stipulations for threatened and endangered species

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify for the GS-05: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: 1) collecting basic biological data from field investigations; 2) preparing samples; 3) making observations on biological conditions; 4) searching published technical sources for information on designated topics and preparing summaries for reference of others. For examples 1-4, the work was closely controlled and a designated person assigned the work with clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use. To qualify for the GS-07: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisting professionals with wildlife inventories; researching and evaluating wildlife habitat data; and assisting in preparing reports and planning documents. -OR- an appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience; -OR- Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.). Superior Academic Achievement Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. S.A.A. is based on (1) Class standing-applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class, based on completed courses; or (2) Grade-Point Average-applicants must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (3) Election to membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society - membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. To qualify for the GS-09: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Planning and conducting wildlife field inventories and monitoring studies. Interpreting data and assisting in preparing wildlife management plans. Preparing reports. Recommending habitat management practices. -OR- Education: Two years of graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in wildlife biology or a directly related field. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Education

Basic Education Requirement for GS-0486:

Degree: biological science that included:
  • At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and
  • At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
  • At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
OR Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
