Duties

The Whole Health Coach provides care and counseling in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through case finding, health teaching, health counseling, and provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and wellbeing. The Whole Health Coach must be competent in the standards of nursing, with the ability to incorporate evidenced based care and initiate care independently based on the appropriate standard operating procedures. The incumbent is expected to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment working as a patient advocate, build strong teams within multiple levels of interdisciplinary staff, and work closely with Veterans, family members and clinicians to promote healthy lifestyle changes as well as foster overall health and wellbeing. S/he will champion patient-centered care principles and strategies to empower Veterans to make choices that will optimize health and well-being and will be responsible for developing a coaching/mentoring relationship through a process of actively working toward better health by providing support, encouragement, and education. S/he must be knowledgeable of all Veterans Health Administration and community resources that may support the patient's vision for health and wellbeing and will assist with the program needs assessment, recommendations for program design, and evaluation or program outcomes. Together, the patient and the Whole Health Coach will construct a plan which best fits the culture and lifestyle of the patient. The Whole Health Coach is expected to be trained and proficient in the adjunct treatments of Reiki, Mindfulness, Guided Imagery, Battlefield Auricular Acupressure (BAA), and with approval, may perform Battlefield Auricular Acupuncture (BFA). The incumbent will lead various Whole Health classes and Mind-Body Skills groups, workshops and individual sessions for patients and staff to promote physical and emotional wellness, decrease burn-out and improve morale, build community across disciplines and train staff in self-care. S/he will provide Health and Wellness Coaching to patients in a variety of healthcare settings, including but not limited to the inpatient arena, primary care, specialty care, community living center, ambulatory specialty care, mental and behavioral health, and community-based locations. Through well-developed clinical experience, the incumbent should be able to anticipate and implement preventive patient care measures and will be expected to manage patient care in an astute manner, which promotes positive patient outcomes including the Personal Health Inventory (PHI), telephone and video appointments, and face-to-face visits. S/he must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs, providing care as considered necessary. S/he will provide guidance to all caregivers and collaborate with other facility staff regarding the Personal Health Planning (PHP) as needed to support patient needs. S/he will report status of service needs and contribute to problem resolution and modification of processes as necessary. In addition, the s/he must possess skills in effective time management, priority setting, assessment and urgent intervention as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with all disciplines and levels of care regarding patient care. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. NOTE: This only applies to past, current, and upcoming VA Health Professional Trainees (HPT). HPT is an individual appointed to temporary positions in one or more VA medical facilities performing clinical or research training experiences to satisfy program or degree requirements or receiving VA Health Professional Scholarship Program. HPTs can be either VA-paid or Without Compensation (WOC). Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted licensure as a graduate professional nurse in any State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: BSN degree, 3-5 years of recent outpatient nursing experience, minimum 1-3 years of Whole Health experience. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within the grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
