The Staff Audiologist position is located in the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Service of the VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS), on the Martinez campus. Service delivery is in person and via telehealth. The audiologist at this level plans, conducts, and coordinates aspects of diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic and rehabilitative services for Veterans with hearing loss and hearing disorders.

Duties

Major Duties include but are not limited to the following: Conducts, plans, and coordinates clinical and administrative aspects of a full range of services associated with contemporary audiology practice. Audiology services include comprehensive hearing testing, hearing aid prescription and management, and Compensation and Pension hearing examinations. Responsible for independent diagnostic assessment and evaluation of cases that are referred to the Audiology Section without limitation as to difficulty or complexity. The incumbent will be responsible to conduct interviews with the patients and appropriate family members or friends; and to select, administer and interpret the diagnostic test results necessary to detect and evaluate the presence of a hearing disorder. In carrying out the clinical duties and responsibilities of this position, the incumbent is responsible for (1) assessing patient conditions from examination, observation and consultation with other members of an interdisciplinary health care team; (2) utilizing diagnostic and evaluative procedures and techniques consistent with contemporary audiology practice; (3) developing an appropriate plan of care and delivering treatment as designed and consistent with principles of evidence-based practice; (4) documenting evaluation and treatment actions and outcomes in appropriate formats in a timely manner, in accordance with facility policy, and completing all related patient care tasks; (5) reporting the findings to Veterans and their families, and to professional colleagues; and (6) optimizing clinical safety and efficiency by maintaining supplies, equipment in good working order. Serves as a consultant to other facility personnel involving the most difficult and complex cases and is a recognized subject matter expert on matters related to audiology and hearing disorders. The incumbent will remain current with new developments in audiology and will maintain professional competency by reading professional journals and engaging in continuing education activities and professional learning experiences, and by communicating with other professionals in audiology and related professions. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: 1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. 2. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English. 3. Education: The individual must meet at least one of the following requirements below: Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from an audiology program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). OR Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). 4. Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Audiologist, GS-12. Experience: Completion of one year of professional experience comparable to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the following KSAs are required: Skill in determining nature, type and severity of hearing/communication /vestibular disorders. Skill in counseling patients and family members regarding management of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders. Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional audiology to other health care professionals. Ability to independently apply professional contemporary audiologic treatments to the full range of patient populations. Preferred Experience: Experience working with cochlear implants and/or vestibular evaluations/treatment. References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/152, PART II, APPENDIX G29.
