This position is located at the Kansas City VA Medical Center within the Facilities Management Department. The Maintenance Mechanic is part of the HVAC-R Shop which is responsible for performing maintenance, inspection, testing, modification, performance of repair work and operation as electrician, air conditioning mechanic, heating equipment mechanic, plumber and solar heating system mechanic.

Duties

Performs a variety of tasks involved in the operation and routine maintenance and repairs in the main building and other buildings located on the Kansas City main campus and several CBOCs associated with the Kansas City VA. Typical work assignments involve performance of repair work and operation as electrician, air conditioning mechanic, heating equipment mechanic, plumber and solar heating system mechanic. Removes and replaces electrical fixtures, controls, outlets and controls. Tests outlets, wiring, breakers to determine faulty equipment. Mounts, connects and adjusts transformers, motors, electrode, relays, solenoids, switches, thermostats, rheostats, aquastats, stack switches and ducts. Repair and replace water regulators, boosters, generators, oil and air supplies and controls, alarms, safety devices, etc. Repair and replace water regulators, boosters, generators, oil and air supplies and controls, alarms, safety devices, etc. Charts and meters indicate such things as water level in the boilers, water pressure and temperature of the water and boiler, operator must determine whether to use pressure reducing valves or whether water pumps should be started or stopped and how long they should be used. Performs maintenance, repair, adjustment, and modification of refrigeration, air conditioning, and control equipment and systems which includes, but not limited to, air handler units, exhaust fans, cooling towers, condensate return system, steam for heat and humidity associated with the conditioning of air, pumps, fan coil units, induction units, air compressors, air dryers, heat recovery, etc. Installs, modifies and repairs new and existing utility, supply and disposal systems such as sewage and water and equipment such as water closets, tubs, lavatories, showers, drinking fountains and icemakers. Operates and queries Building Automation System Computer and makes adjustments to heating and cooling system as required. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The employee handles and carries tools, equipment and testing devices that seldom weigh over 50 pounds. The work is normally performed at sites where most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. Occasionally, platforms and scaffolding are needed to reach parts of the systems such as fans, electrical and water lines and duct work. Is occasionally required to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Working Conditions: Most of the work is done inside, but the employee is subject to temperature changes when working on equipment such as wiring in computer rooms. The employee is occasionally subject to burns, cuts, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments. Exposure is repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs.
