In this position you will use a computerized system for inventory control and provide cleaning and decontamination support through routine housekeeping tasks and manual labor for various levels of Bio-Safety Level laboratories, Biotechnology Development Model, and other office and administrative areas at the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF).

Duties

The duties described are for the full-performance level. The duties may include, but are not limited to: Provides general laboratory support for the NBAF Biosafety Level (BSL)-2, BSL-3E and Ag, BSL-4, and Biotechnology Development Module (BDM). Adheres to clean/dirty workflows in a scientific environment, ensuring no cross contamination or breech of containment procedures. Performs lab and containment lunchroom cleaning and decontamination tasks. Transports biohazardous waste, glassware, and laundry from autoclaves to designated location. Cleans, decontaminates, and deodorizes waste containers and carts, lifting and carrying 20-30 pounds of waste. Maintains all restroom supplies such as, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc. in the restrooms, locker rooms and laboratory spaces. Mixes or blends routine cleaning solutions to proper concentration for decontamination process. Ensures that correct quantities of scrubs, towels, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and general biological laboratory use items. Assists in the tracking and stocking supplies used in the laboratories.

Requirements

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Individuals who were born male after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

  • Testing Designated Position: Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. Final appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results for illegal drug use.
  • Exposed to cleaning agents. Works inside biocontainment 100% of the time.
  • Work environment may be hot or humid. Exposed to noise from operating machinery.
  • Moderately heaving physical effort is required with frequent lifting, carrying and moving of objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Special safety precautions are required, and the incumbent uses protective gear such as laboratory coats, safety aprons, different types of gloves, safety glasses, and goggles.
  • Subject to possible exposure to contagious diseases, pathogens, and other environmental hazards within the laboratory.
  • Quarantine for several days after entry into containment, staying away from cows, sheep, goats, pigs, until the period is up.
  • Criminal Justice Information Services database check required for work involving Biological Select Agents and Toxins.
