The Division of Applied Science & Technology is seeking two individuals to fill the vacancies of two program directors: One to direct the PET/SPECT/CT/X-Ray Program and one to direct the MRI Program.

Duties

Performs professional engineering and scientific program management to enrich practices, techniques, and knowledge in the medical and biological sciences. Responsible for management of biomedical engineering research, such as research and development of new and revised medical devices and new uses of existing medical devices. Responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance in a major subject matter area. Identifies and formulates program needs to achieve an integrated and responsive effort in the assigned area. Performs scientific and administrative reviews and analyses of applications/proposals from a programmatic viewpoint and advises on the selection of consultants to ensure the complete and fair scientific evaluation of applications/proposals. Organizes and conducts workshops, conferences, symposia, or similar activities to foster the aims of the organization to facilitate communication among investigators, or to advise on the status of progress and emerging directions of research.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Biomedical Engineer (Imaging Program Director), GS-858-14 position, you must: A. have a bachelor's degree in professional engineering from a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; OR B. have a bachelor's degree in professional engineering that includes differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced that first-year physics and chemistry) in 5 of the following 7 areas of engineering science or physics: (1) statics, dynamics; (2) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (3) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (4) thermodynamics; (5) electrical fields and circuits; (6) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (7) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics; OR C. be registered as a professional engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico; OR D. be currently registered as an Engineering Intern (EI) or an Engineer in Training (EIT); OR E. have successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico; OR F. have successfully completed at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum as described above; OR G. have successfully completed a curriculum that led to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology OR in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology AND I have at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. In addition, to qualify for a GS-14 level Biomedical Engineer Position, you must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: creating and improving designs, instrumentation, materials, diagnostic and therapeutic devices used in healthcare and biomedical research; evaluating trends and emerging fields in biomedical engineering research and assessing the adequacy and relevance to existing program needs; providing guidance on scientific program direction, priorities, and funding to achieve organizational goals; preparing research highlights and reports summarizing and explaining the significance of key research accomplishments by grantees; AND organizing and conducting workshops, conferences or symposia designed to facilitate communication within the scientific community. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
