This announcement uses the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce (Title 5 USC Section 9905) direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Duties

Operates one or more various make, type, and size of gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction. Digs, grades, excavates, and moves earth and other materials in connection with building embankments, laying dredging pipeline, building roads, digging ditches and trenches, and other work typical of construction projects. Performs required operators maintenance, makes minor changes and adjustments during operations, and assists mechanic with major repairs. May occasionally operate other type and size equipment for which qualified when required by workload. May direct a crew of 5 to 8 pipelineman in laying, repairing, and taking up dredging pipeline; maintenance and repair of disposal area embankments; construction of trestles, sluices, and splash boards. May occasionally be required to perform duties of a pipelineman. Operates at construction sites with difficult terrain problems such as steep slopes and grades, swampy areas, and soft ground.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess or be willing and able to obtain/maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Must be able to take and pass a pre-employment physical and one every two years thereafter.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Must serve a one year probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Your resume must demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the common tasks such as operating various types of gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction and experience maintaining the operating equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating on rough surfaces. Frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open drivers seat or platform, on slopes, grades, and rolling surfaces. Individual is exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. Subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motors and exhaust.
