Duties
At the GS-05/06 level, you will work under close supervision in a developmental capacity performing assignments and completing training . As a Firefighter (Basic Life Spt/Hazardous Matls Tech) at the GS-07 level you will perform the following duties:
Provide medical care as an emergency medical technician. Recognize signs which have specific bearing on patient condition, while observing patients appearance and behavior.
Perform standardized emergency medical procedures for critically and seriously ill patients.
Serve as driver-operator of motorized firefighting equipment, exercising a thorough knowledge of equipment capabilities.
Drive firefighting equipment to and from scene of fire; positions vehicles so that maximum utilization may be made of its facilities and equipment.
Serve as a member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property.
Unreel and connect hoses, lay hose lines, operate charged lines; place and raise ladders; operate portable and stationary firefighting apparatus.
Use chemicals, axes, bars, hooks, and other firefighting equipment to extinguish fires.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program. Must sign DA Form 5019 acknowledging both pre-appointment and periodic random drug testing requirements.
- Must possess a valid state issued driver's license.
- Position is designated as an Inclement Weather position and is subject to recall to duty and mandatory overtime.
- Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position
- Must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
- Incumbent must participate in the Fire Division's Fitness and Wellness Program that includes a cardiovascular physical fitness program IAW NFPA 1583 and DODI 6055.06.
- Incumbent must wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Position requires you to work 72 hours per week to include weekends and holidays.
- Mission Essential Position: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief/Commander.
- Incumbent may be required to remain on duty after official shift ends, i.e., mandatory overtime; subject to recall to duty. Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at their residence to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.

To qualify for the GS-05 based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an engine crew for an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.
To qualify for the GS-06 based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; performing rescue operations; and controlling hazardous materials incidents.
To qualify for the GS-07 based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; performing rescue operations; controlling hazardous materials incidents; detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; and operation of fire communications equipment.

At the GS-05 level you may substitute education for specialized experience by successfully completing a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in an accredited college of university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.

Combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience described above may be used to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-05 level.

Additional Qualification Requirements GS-05: Must possess and maintain the following Certifications: Firefighter I and Firefighter II. With the exception of the HAZMAT Incident Command Certification level, the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program shall recognize and accept certification certificates from any entity accredited by the IFSAC or the Pro-Board only when the DoD employee has satisfied the required prerequisite certification level(s). Employees who have completed IFSAC or Pro-Board accredited training programs may request DoD equivalent certification certificates under the reciprocity provision of the certification program. The certificates being submitted for reciprocity must have the appropriate IFSAC or Pro-Board seal on them.
Additional Qualification Requirements GS-06: Must possess and maintain the following Certifications: Firefighter I and Firefighter II, HAZMAT Technician and EMT certification.
Additional Qualification Requirements GS-07: Must possess and maintain the following Certifications: Firefighter I and Firefighter II, HAZMAT Technician and EMT certification, Driver Operator - Pumper, Driver Operator - Mobile Water Supply, Driver Operator - Aerial.
