The Dental Laboratory Technician is assigned to the Dental Service, Central Arkansas Veteran's Healthcare System, South Central VA Healthcare Network VISN 16, Veterans Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Little Rock, AR.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Works closely with oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and other dental and medical staff such as Radiotherapy Service in collaboration of the design and construction of wax compensation of the face for patients with face lesions. Gives training and basic dental laboratory instructions to special assigned on an intermittent basis for understudy or training in terminology, morphology and oral anatomy and understanding of dental materials and use of tools and equipment. Follows accepted laboratory practices in fabricating the appliances independently to completion. Uses judgement in selecting and applying guidelines, especially when more than one applies, and regarding precedent setting situation. Designs and fabricates metal substructures for both porcelain and acrylic veneers, applying a knowledge of recognized techniques and master of the art of dental ceramics and plastics which follow fixed patterns but requires imaginatory adjustments to technique in unusual cases. Constructs stone, amalgam, or electroplated dies, or casts with removable dies for fabricating crowns implants or fixed partial dentures. Constructs teaching models of various complex metal substructures for fixed appliances to include crowns and partial dentures. Plans and conducts laboratory instruction for residents, interns and lower-level laboratory technicians as needed. Gives training and basic dental laboratory instructions to special assigned on an intermittent basis for understudy or training in terminology, morphology and oral anatomy and understanding of dental materials and use of tools and equipment. Pours impressions with dental stone for diagnostic casts utilizing the double pour technique. Pours final complete dentures impressions using the boxing technique for uniform master casts borders and a more accurate cast. Pours final impressions for the construction of removable partial dentures. Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-8: having at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-7) in the Federal Service that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Dental Laboratory Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience includes: use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE GS-8: successfully completed at least one and one-half (11/2) years of graduate level education with course work or an internship that is directly related to the work of the (i.e. dentistry, dental hygiene, dental technology) position. One (1) year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, eighteen (18) semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one (1) year of full-time study requirement. (Transcripts required) OR COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GS-8: having equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience, as described above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the position.
