This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Located in central New Jersey, Burlington County, Fort Dix is 72 miles south of New York City, 34 miles north of Philadelphia. Close to the Jersey shore, Fort Dix is within driving distance of a variety of leisure activities, museums, fishing, hunting, skiing, hiking locations, etc.
Duties
Perform maintenance on tactical vehicles, heavy equipment and utility vehicles to include scheduled service, repair and overhaul.
Perform repairs on major components of equipment such as engines, transmissions and differentials.
Perform service, tests and repairs on power generation equipment and power convertors.
Read, understand, and interpret technical manuals and make repairs in accordance with those procedures.
Properly use specialized tools such as lathes, grinders and pullers along with common hand tools.
Repair and overhaul air conditioning systems on a variety of vehicles and refrigeration units.
Operate all assigned equipment to include tactical vehicles, construction equipment and general purpose equipment to test for proper operation.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Position will require occasional evening, weekend and/or holiday hours, to include mandatory overtime as mission dictates.

- This position will require temporary duty travel up to 20% of time.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision which includes: performing repairs to wheeled and tracked vehicles, and heavy mobile equipment; making operational checks of completed repairs of wheeled and tracked vehicles, and heavy mobile equipment; and utilizing test equipment to diagnose malfunctions and mechanical discrepancies. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Selective Placement Factor: This position has the following Selective Placement Factors which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment:
Position requires a valid Refrigerant and Recovery certification. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your certification.)
Position requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver's license. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your Class A Commercial Driver's license.)
Physical Effort: Required to stand, stoop bend, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Repairs are often completed while the vehicle is overhead. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 70 pounds. Occasionally must lift and carry heavier items.
Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside. Work is usually performed inside where it is drafty and noisy, and fumes from vehicles are usually present. Subject to extremes of weather and temperature in addition to traffic hazards when road testing equipment. Must stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. Vehicle fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns and stains. May be required to work in awkward positions and cramped quarters for short periods of time. Possibility of injuries from falls while climbing onto and off equipment. May be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, safety shoes, goggles, hearing protection, safety glasses and gloves.
