Located in the Maintenance and Repair Section of the Facilities Management Service at the James E. Van Zandt Medical Center. Incumbent is assigned wide variety of duties involving installation, modification, and repair. Incumbent is responsible for carpentry duties such as maintenance, alteration/repair of walls, doors, windows, ceilings, and flooring surfaces, as well as, maintenance, repairs, applications, and installations associated with painting trade, and also serves as back-up locksmith.

Duties

The work requires knowledge of the maintenance, repair, alteration, fabrication, and installations associated with the painting, carpentry, and locksmith trades. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs all duties associated with the application, maintenance, and repair of all types of finishes, including special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining. Ensures that the coating finish meets match, texture, decorative, thickness, and level requirements, check such things as viscosity of coating materials and thickness of coatings on surfaces. Constructs, alters, maintains, and repairs buildings, structures, partitions, panels, shelving, work benches, furniture, acoustical ceiling systems, metal-framed walls, ceilings, and soffits, gypsum wallboard, handrails, wall protection, and corner guards. Performs a full range of carpentry tasks such as applying plastic laminates to wood, cutting grooves, and compound miter joints. Installs, replaces, and repairs flooring surfaces to include but not limited to vinyl composite tile, vinyl plank, carpet, and sheet goods. Hangs items on walls using anchors, installs blocking and bracing as required. Repairs, modifies, and installs locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations. Manufactures and duplicates keys; also keys and combines locking mechanisms. Opens standard locks when keys are missing or broken. Effects repairs to locks by replacing defective parts and performing repairs. Displays a working knowledge of electronic security devices, card access systems, sensors, and how they integrate with mechanical locking systems n order to troubleshoot and affect repairs. Lays out measures, cuts, selects, and installs materials per requirements, whether they be field measurements, work orders, or sketches. Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives, applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices including those designed to give special effects. Adds various agents (for example; retardants, drying agents) and combine coating mixtures to get the proper color, texture, consistency, and drying state. Displays a thorough knowledge of shop mathematics and skilled woodworking techniques. Fabricates signs using a computerized engraving machine and/or lettering with stencils. Uses small hand tools, power tools, and key duplicating and stamping machines. Selects tools and materials appropriate to the work assignment. Physical Requirements: In performing daily tasks, physical effort and stamina is required in walking, stooping, kneeling, working with hands over head or in close quarters and in strained positions, lifting and using different muscles in different positions. The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic work platforms. Requires good vision (with or without glasses) and should have good hearing (aid permitted). They frequently handle, lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. The incumbent prepares, and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. Most work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequent lifting, carrying, and setting up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds, and occasionally 40 pounds or over occurs. He/she is standing or walking much of the time and must be in good overall physical condition. Physical capability to regularly walk long distances, dexterity and accurate eye hand coordination, and corrected 20/20 vision and accurate color perception are required.
