The Lead Interventional Radiology Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of duties in the areas of Angiography, Interventional Radiology, Interventional Oncology, surgery and cardiac catheterization lab.

Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments
Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results.
Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy dealing with customers.
Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure.
Ability to identify anatomy and physiology, cross-sectional anatomy, and recognize unusual images, and determine proper positioning.
Serves the Medical Center as a multi-disciplined technologist with primary responsibilities for performing a full range of diagnostic radiological procedures.
Performs the technical functions related to all complex imaging procedures
Schedules patients and adjusts patient examination priorities.
Works with radiologist in obtaining written informed consent for special procedures.
Ensures adequate quantities of supplies are available to meet workload demands.
Assures procedure rooms are always stocked with necessary supplies.
Determines costs for specific exams.
Coordinates new product evaluation.
Determines staffing requirements and develops the weekly/monthly schedules.
Coordinates leave requests i.e. vacation schedules, to maintain optimal staffing levels.
Trains new technologist in procedures.
Coordinates the repair and installation of equipment.
Serves as the liaison between Radiology and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors.
Recommends equipment improvements, repairs, and upgrades,.
Participates in developing specifications for new equipment requests.
Develops and maintains a quality control program.
Performs peripheral and visceral angiography of the abdominal systems.
Performs myelography of the complete spine utilizing conventional X-ray units.
Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques.
Prepares contrast materials.
Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients.
Performs image reconstructions on advanced workstations.
Schedules appointments using Veterans Health Information Systems.
Utilizes computed and/or Digital and/or Direct Radiography and imaging network,
Reviews radiology requests for technical soundness, accuracy, and conformity to policy
Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms.
Performs irregular hour emergency studies on standby, 24 hours per day.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
a. Citizenship.
All applicants are required to be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.
b. Certification.
All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable.

Education.
Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).

c. Credentialing Standards.
Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel.
Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.

English Language Proficiency.
All applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates:
Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-11
(1) Experience.
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a quality control technologist, DRT team leader, supervisory radiologic technologist, [PACS technologist, clinical program director], or an assistant chief radiologic technologist.
(2) Assignments.
For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments: Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The technologist functions as a lead technologist for a group of DRTs [at the GS-10 level and below. The technologist performs] a full range of general radiologic treatment procedures and possesses broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area. The technologist is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor.
The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
i. *Skill in directing on-the-job training for employees.
ii. *Ability to evaluate work performance of lower level employees and recommend performance ratings.
iii. *Skill in technical planning and oversight to set and adjust work priorities, and [ensure] that work requirements are met based on employee capabilities.
iv. Ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including knowledge of growth and development.
v. *Knowledge of medical center, VHA, and government-wide human resources management regulations, policies, and procedures.
