This position is part of the Facilities Management service line and is located in Omaha, Nebraska at the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System Hospital. The Boiler Plant Operator will operate and maintain water tube and fire tube boilers and is the sole operator of a boiler plant with capacity of 90,000 pounds of steam per hour.

Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. Major duties listed but not limited to: Operates and maintains natural gas and oil fired power boilers and ancillary powered auxiliary equipment with manual and automatic controls to produce saturated steam. Operates and monitors fuel pressure, control valves, fuel strainers, relief valves, water softeners, and other similar equipment through manual and automatic means, Performs a wide range of water tests on boiler water, condensate and softened water daily. Determines and calculates effective dosages of chemical treatment to maintain samples at established levels. Makes entry, assesses trends and makes recommendations in water treatment logs daily. Operates and maintains two (2) 30,000!bs/hr. de-aerating boiler feed units. Checks performance of unit through chemical testing; switches units monthly, or as required for emergency, operation and maintenance requirements, to ensure equal service. Inspects unit for leaks and performs repairs on vessel, piping, and controls as needed. Interprets readings, operating manuals and manufacturer's correspondence to provide constant safe, economical, and efficient plant operation on gas and/or fuel oil operation. Answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees). Manage and help train employees on proper steps in completing work orders and associated tasks. Overseeing management and proper delegation of work to shop personnel in terms of corrective and preventative maintenance. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. To be found at least minimally qualified for the position of Boiler Plant Operator at the WL-09 level, your application and supporting documents must demonstrate the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for satisfactory job performance. For this position, the ability to lead or supervise is prime. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to: report to supervisors on status and progress of work and causes of delays; oversee management and proper delegation of work to shop personnel in terms of corrective and preventative maintenance; maintain a current knowledge of procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives and be able to answer questions from other workers regarding these; and monitor daily work orders, prioritize work to meet supervisors deadlines and route work to shop personnel. Working Conditions: Frequently works in confined areas in and around boilers and other mechanical equipment. Work is performed generally indoors but without temperature control, where there is exposure to dust, dirt, chemicals, extreme temperatures, steam, noise and unpleasant odors. Occasionally provides service and response in outdoor areas under adverse conditions. Exposure may cause potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises and chemical irritations. Operator comes in contact with hazardous chemicals such as caustics, acids, phosphates, amines, hydroxides, steam, and hazardous equipment. Incumbent shall employ good safety practices and procedures to avoid injury to self, other personnel, and/or equipment which may seriously affect the operation of the hospital.
