This position is located in the Psychology Clinical Investigator Team (CIT) at VA Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS) - New Orleans VA Medical Center in New Orleans, LA. The Health Science Specialist will function as Science Research Coordinator and coordinate research activities for the Psychology Clinical Investigator Team (CIT) and assist the Psychologist/Principal Investigators (PIs) in conducting their research projects.
Duties

This is a term appointment not to exceed 1 year 1 month. Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration of more than 1 year, but not more than 4 years and are subject to a 1 year trial period. Should the need warrant, term appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of the 4 year limitation. The appointment to a term position does not confer eligibility for promotion, reassignment, or transfer to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
The Health Science Specialist is critical in supporting the research endeavors of the Service in its mission to improve the delivery of health care to eligible veterans suffering from mental illness, to promote understanding of the outcomes of mental health services through education and training, and to develop improved mental health services delivery models and systems. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Developing policies and procedures related to mental health/psychology research
Working with Veteran participants who have mental health diagnoses
Evaluating research programs and gathering data on the status of research projects
Recruiting mental health participants into research studies, managing clinical tests, developing program evaluation policies and procedures, and evaluating contents of research programs
Conducting a research program solely or as part of an investigative team, in the areas of health services, epidemiology, and/or clinical research
Performing studies that have a broad and complex scope, address problems that are difficult to define, and that require sophisticated research techniques (e.g., innovative statistical analytical methods; creative approaches not previously described in the literature, application of state-of-the-art research tools and methodologies, etc.)
Contributing work to the overall research program effort, answer important questions about mental health, and open new opportunities, extrapolations, and hypotheses to be explored in future research
Executing his/her portion of the research program in accordance with established local and national regulation and policy
Providing leadership, instruction, training and guidance to VA and non-VA staff assigned to the research
team in such areas as research protocols execution and methodology, conduct of human subject's research, good clinical research practices
Maximizing diversity equity and inclusion, and ensuring data privacy and security.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.

Qualifications
Basic Requirement: The following are basic requirements for appointment as a Health Science Specialist in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), which all applicants must met.
Basic Education: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Minimum Requirement: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, the following minimum requirement criteria must be met to be qualified for this position.
Specialized Experience (GS-12): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i.e., GS-11) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization, which is generally the experience acquired post Ph.D. or Doctoral degree. Qualifying examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: experience working with primary investigators who are Psychologists on data entry, analysis, and recruitment of participants; utilizing pertinent laws, regulations, policies and precedents that affect the use of program and related support resources for research projects; and understanding, and providing informed consent with mental health patients.
