About the Position: This job announcement is for 2 (two) Welder, WG-3703-11 positions at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District. These positions will be located at the Mississippi River Project Office in Pleasant Valley, IA.

Duties

Perform welds on metals using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), and oxygen/acetylene and electric in flat, horizontal, overhead, and vertical positions. Make prototype models or patterns, layouts of items making correct measurements, forming, shaping and bending so that each piece will fit to the specification required. Select and use the appropriate welding processes and complete work according to critical tolerances. Use templates, jigs, blueprints, and other guides to repair, modify or fabricate repairs of light or intricately made mechanical parts, which must fit in assemblies where close tolerances are required. Make a wide range of welds from simple to precision welding; determining disassembly steps and necessary repairs and what material is to be used. Perform fabrication (fitter) duties using verbal communication, sketches, and blueprints from engineers, supervisors, or other facility personnel. Modify metal items for all types of equipment, including repair of light or intricately made mechanical parts, which must be assembled where close tolerances are required.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical and subsequent annual physicals.
  • You must possess and maintain a valid state issued driver's license.
  • Must be certified for 3G and 4G welding and meet American Welding Society Specification number AWS D 1.5 within 12 months of your appointment date.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain District operator's permits for various equipment within 12 months of your appointment date.

Frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds. Working Conditions: The work is done indoors and outdoors, sometimes in bad weather, in areas that are noisy, dirty, and smoky. Occasionally working from ladders, platforms, and personal baskets plus boatswain's chairs. There is danger of falls, electrical shock, burns, cuts, bruises, broken bones, and exposure to fumes, flying spares, fire and arc burns from welding equipment. There is discomfort when wearing protective clothing and equipment like respirators, gloves, safety hats, leather, flotation devices, and safety belts. Work is frequently performed away from shop area, at navigation locks, control structures, bridges, etc., aboard various items of floating plants, dredges, and derrick barges throughout the district, either alone or with assistance from other workers. Arrangements for quarters on or near job site in the field for the duration of assigned work are the responsibility of employee.
