This position is located in Kalispell, Montana performing a variety of functions, including: Accessioning specimens into the computer system; collecting, evaluating and processing patient specimens; answering questions related to sample collection; instructing and assisting patients and sending out specimens for testing.

Duties

As a Health Technician - Phlebotomy you will follow policies and procedures established by the service, medical center, the VA and regulatory agencies. Duties include but are not limited to: Collects and processes blood and body fluid specimens, ensuring safety and non-traumatic processes are used with critical concern for the patient and the quality of the specimen with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required re-sticks. Identify correct patient identification, which means asking their full name and last four of their social security number. Verifies that the proper tubes are used and the correct amount of blood is drawn. Labels all tubes with the patient's name, full social security number. date, time and the phlebotomist's initials and re-identifies patient using full name and full SSN. Performs blood collection duties in a courteous manner and makes the patient feel as comfortable as possible. Explains what is about to happen and any necessary processes required of the patient for specimen collection. Adheres to safety, infection control and universal precautions at all times while collecting samples to include wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment. Must be proficient in the area of phlebotomy, being able to draw all but the most difficult patients and follow proper procedures for redrawing blood. In addition, must develop the essential speed required to complete the blood drawing duties. Responsible for receiving and storage of Laboratory supplies to includes, but is not limited to, documenting the receipt date on each item, verifying the storage requirement of each item by temperature requirement (room temperature, refrigerator or freezer), and rotating the stock to ensure the newest supply is in the back. Is required to check the expiration date of all reagents and supplies in the room temperature storage room for expiration, sequestering the item, and notifying the supervisor of the findings. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/16/2023. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education s described below: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge and skill in phlebotomy techniques/procedures and other specimen collection procedures, Knowledge of procedures and policies for processing laboratory tests for reference laboratories. Knowledge of the different procedures for multiple tests and ability to follow different test procedure requirements, Knowledge of infection control, safety and universal precautions procedures/practices, Ability to package and arrangement shipment of specimens meeting all requirements, Knowledge and skills to monitor/maintain laboratory inventory following OSHA, JC and other regulatory body requirements, and Computer Skills - Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. Physical Requirements: The work requires extensive and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending, lifting, walking, stooping, and stretching. The work requires manual dexterity and a large degree of concentration.
