Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions. AREA INFORMATION These positions are located throughout Yellowstone National Park. Elevation at the various duty stations range from 5300 feet to 7800 feet. Park Headquarters are located at Mammoth Hot Springs, elevation 6200 feet. Medical clinics are available in the summer at Mammoth Hot Springs, Lake Village, and Old Faithful. Temperatures in the park vary from 30s/40s to 70s/80s Fahrenheit. Park interior roads are not plowed after mid-November and interior duty stations are typically only reachable by snowmobile, November through April. A pool of snowmobiles for personal use is available for interior duty stationed employees on a reservation system where reservations may be affected by other priorities. Medical services, grocery shopping, banking, entertainment, UPS, and other delivery services are NOT available in the winter in the interior of the park. U.S. Postal Service mail is delivered twice a week or less in the winter. Although this isolation is acceptable to some employees, others find it a hardship for themselves and their families. Reassignment to less isolated location is not an option. Housing is available in the interior locations, and may be available at park headquarters. Changes in assigned housing may be possible through Yellowstone's housing bid process. We strongly suggest you thoroughly investigate the winter lifestyle characteristics in Yellowstone National Park interior sites. Federal government housing is available.
