This position is located within the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service, Miami VA Healthcare System to include Broward Outpatient Clinic.
Duties
Incumbent serves as a "floater" within Pathology & Laboratory Service, to maintain competency in all the areas they are to cover and will complex analytical testing procedures independently; reaching for supervision of a Medical Technologist as needed/directed within the various sections of the service.
Performs established and new difficult and complex laboratory tests and examinations which involve very fine distinctions.
Typically, many extremely delicate and exacting steps are required, and the instrumentation is elaborate and complex very fine settings and measurements.
The incumbent independently plans and carries out assignments, develops techniques to be used, coordinates work with others and informs the technical supervisor of progress and problems that he/she cannot solve.
The Medical Laboratory technician uses complex judgment and independent decision-making skills in interpreting and selecting corrective actions for quality issues, customer service- Incidents, instruments malfunctions and irregular results.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/22/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06
The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Specialized Experience: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.
In addition to the IOR requirements you must also qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: An in-depth knowledge of laboratory procedures and terminology for all disciplines of the laboratory sufficient to perform complex analytical testing procedures within the Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology and Urinalysis, sections of the service. Ability to use metric units of measurements and perform statistical mathematics calculations for quality control purposes. Practical knowledge of medical technician principles, concepts and methodology sufficient to perform a broad range of moderate complexity testing. Knowledge of technical and mechanical indicators of Instrument malfunction sufficient to Identify and correct errors. Knowledge of test correlation sufficient to check validity of results. Knowledge to screen requests and specimen labels to ensure completeness, appropriateness, and priority for efficient handling. Incumbent is required to know minimum specimen requirements for numerous in?house and send-out procedures (over 400). Requisite information includes type of specimen required, specimen temperature requirements (ambient, refrigerated or frozen), and many other Federal, State, and Local Regulations regarding specimen handling.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion with considerable walking and long periods of standing. It requires frequent bending, and occasional moving of heavy supplies (40 pounds or more).
