This position serves as the Maintenance Mechanic for the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center (OBVAMC). The OBVAMC covers 48+/- acres and approximately 720,000 gross building square footage and has three CBOC locations, Longview and Texarkana, Texas, and Monroe Louisiana. This position works under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor in the Night Construction Shop in the Maintenance and Operations Section.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-Constructs, alters, repairs, and modifies items made of metal, wood, and wood substitutes
-Assembles/disassembles, installs, repairs and modifies steel stud framing, wood and wood structures for structural soundness
-Mixes and finishes plaster and applies to walls and ceilings, taking into consideration type of lathing, required thickness, weather conditions
-Selects proper tools and materials for work to be accomplished
-Patches and repairs damaged plaster or stucco surfaces
-Removes and installs flooring, ceramic tile, structural and glazed tiles for walls, floors and ceilings in medical offices and various locations
-Maintains, repairs, alters and renovates the interior and exterior structures built from concrete block and ceramic tiles
-Locates leaks, determines cause and extent of damages to the facility
-Reads, interprets, plans, lays out and performs work accordingly to building plans, blueprints, drawings, as-builts, oral and written instructions and from maintenance complaints or requests
-Applies materials or paint using acceptable trade methods such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, graining devices and devices that give special effects
-Examines and assesses state of aged or damaged equipment
-Operates tools such as a table saw, circular saw, drill press, jack hammer, hand tools, measuring devices, and other equipment that are required by carpenters
-Creates complex drawings as a layout of the entire floor plan
-Ensures assembly is consistent with building codes, safety standards, local standards, and manufacturing standards
-Repairs and finishes gypsum walls by applying joint compound and tape to cracks and joints-Considers type of activity, location and, infectious control requirements
-Prepared and spreads mortar or adhesive, cutting, shaping, and laying blocks and tiles, and finishing joints
-Determines the type of work to be conducted and proper techniques and methods
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday - Friday, 2:30pm - 11:00pm - Subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Physical Requirements: May handle or carry weights up to 90 pounds, and occasionally more. Assistance is usually available for handling of heavier material and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, walking, climbing, stooping, ability for normal mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, normal hearing and vision. Must have physical capabilities for working inside and outside in excessive heat and cold, noise, confined areas, inclement weather and on intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces that can be found at or in transit to or from work sites. May receive minor cuts and abrasions while performing these duties. Must be able to work from ladders and platforms, and work in awkward and uncomfortable positions.
Working Conditions: Incumbent may be assigned to work in areas/confined spaces where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained consistent with applicable laws and regulations. Incumbent will be required to wear respirators and must be physically able to perform assigned work tasks as directed above and operate safety equipment. Typical safety equipment required by the trade is safety shoes, safety glasses, respirators, protective clothing and hard hats. Employee will work a regular tour of duty (which will be set for 2:30pm to 11:00pm) to maximize work schedule and type of work required to perform, may work overtime, nights or weekends. Incumbent must possess the physical and mental qualifications required to secure the applicable state operator's permit/license. Standing, stooping, bending, reaching, stretching and lifting are required in performing normal duties. Occasionally, objects as heavy as 50 pounds must be lifted and moved, sometimes with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.
