The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Laborer. The Laborer will function under the Facilities Management Service. This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.205) for this occupation.

Duties

The duties of this position may include but are not limited to: Mows, prunes, and seeds; digs and fills in holes, ditches, trenches with pick and shovel where dirt is hard and compact. Lifts and moves heavy furniture/large equipment items (both crated and un-crated). Assists in snow and ice removal during the winter season. Provides assistance to other workers with loading and transporting of furniture and supplies. Assists in tree trimming and removal, operates rototillers, sod cutters, air compressors, brush chipper, fertilizer spreaders, etc. Uses lawn mowers, cuts trees (using axe or chain saw) and operates power post hold digger. Maintains all power and hand equipment he/she uses, keeping them oiled and in good working order. Assists gardeners on grounds work; performs various manual labor tasks for other services and all units of Engineering Service. Performs duties in a safe manner to avoid personal injury or property damage. Works outside in all kinds of weather and inside may be dusty, drafty, poorly lit, noisy, and/or extremely hot. Determines the steps necessary to complete the project; selects the appropriate equipment to be used. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Laborer is expected to apply heavy physical effort on a daily ongoing basis, in doing such tasks as frequently lifting and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds (and often up to 100 pounds or more), operating power mowers on grades or pushing heavy equipment.Works outside in all kinds of weather and inside may be dusty, drafty, poorly lit, noisy, and/or extremely hot. The equipment and tasks requires special care be taken to avoid serious injury by using safety gloves, ear plugs, and safety glasses
