The William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI ( http://www.madison.va.gov/) is an 131-bed acute care facility which provides tertiary medical, surgical, neurological, and psychiatric care, and a full range of outpatient services. This facility serves 130,000 Veterans who live in 15 counties in south-central Wisconsin and in five counties in northwestern Illinois.

This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Clinical Nutrition Section of Nutrition and Food Services. The Clinical Dietetic Technician has the responsibility of providing a high-level of technical assistance and support to the Clinical Registered Dietitian Nutritionist in providing all steps of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nutrition Care Process and for participating as an Interdisciplinary Care Team member. The incumbent performs duties with a high level of independence and demonstrates exceptional competence regarding clinical and administrative duties while functioning within the assigned Scope of Practice. Duties: Serves as expert on procedures related to the processing of diet orders Prints lists, reports, labels and tray tickets following the established schedule. Accurately interprets and processes orders received through the VISTA system. Identifies potential errors/conflicting information in orders received and takes corrective action. Orders/cancels supplemental feedings and adjust meal patterns to accommodate individual preferences and tolerances within their diet prescription. Accurately reviews and prints tray tickets in a timely manner and in a correct order to be used for tray line assembly When necessary makes diet changes on trays to meet new restrictions. Calculates results of patient nutrient intake studies and communicates this information to the clinical dietitian and/or records in the medical record Interviews patients to obtain information on responses related to daily food intake Documents information in the medical record and alerts dietitian if problems are identified. Evaluates patients' and/or concerned others' understanding of prescribed diet and documents in the medical record. Assembles new tray or pulls trays for NPO and discharged patients. Observes patients during mealtime rounds to determine adequacy of intake, identify feeding difficulties and to discuss acceptance, tolerance and conformance to diet. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education Requirement: Successfully completed a course of study in an accredited college leading to an associate's degree in Dietetic Technology with an emphasis in Nutrition Care or the equivalent post-secondary education. Education must have included instruction in nutrition care/diet therapy, the natural sciences (e.g. anatomy, physiology, biochemistry), social sciences (e.g. psychology, sociology), food sciences, medical terminology, communications, and education. In addition, education must have included supervised field experience in a hospital or similar clinical setting. Note: Copies of pertinent transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application. Education will not be credited without documentation. AND Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS 6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS 5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Examples of specialized experience typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of the effects of pharmacology with nutrition (food/drug interactions); Knowledge of human nutrition requirements in health and disease; Ability to assign Nutrition Diagnosis to Veterans meeting established criteria; Ability to interview Veterans and caregivers and obtain appropriate information. Skill in communicating orally and in writing to groups and individuals; Ability to follow oral and written instructions; Basic knowledge of medical terminology; Ability to use basic math skills; Ability to provide nutrition education to Veterans on regular or modified diets individually or in groups; Knowledge of Problem Oriented Medical Record and the ADIME format in order to document pertinent nutrition related data; Ability to organize and record statistical data for administrative reports. Physical Demands:The work requires walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, such as meal trays, instruction material, books and manuals. Some of the work is sedentary, such as computer activities. Computer entry of electronic progress notes, entailing multiple episodes of keyboard stokes is a daily responsibility. It may be necessary to push electronic equipment and arrange classroom areas in preparation of classes. Work Environment: Work is performed in a hospital, requiring normal safety precautions typical of a Medical Center with critically ill Veterans, psychiatric, Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center, Domiciliary and/or Ambulatory Care Units, and involves some exposure to contagious disease. The employee must observe normal safety precautions while working in an office setting with electrical and stationary equipment and use correct lifting techniques. Discomfort may exist due to ventilating system and/or humidity changes in various offices. Universal Blood/Body fluid precautions may necessitate protective equipment be worn in situations of potential exposure.
