The VA Central Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for an Security Assistant (Dispatcher). The Security Assistant (Dispatcher) will function in Police and Security Service.
Duties
Major Duties:
The incumbent monitors and receives routine and emergency calls from a variety of sources that need police, fire, medical or other emergency services.
Determines the nature and location of the emergency; uses their judgment to prioritize events and commit police resources appropriately; determines what notifications are necessary based upon event type, makes such notifications and coordinates follow-up communications.
Receives and process emergency calls maintains contact with law enforcement units on assignment, maintains status and location of police and coordinates communication between agencies as needed.
Monitors direct emergency alarms, answers non? emergency calls for assistance. Enters, updates and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems and sensitive databases.
Monitors and directs the response to security and life safety communications, radio dispatching, telephone, and other emergency communication circuits.
Receives and compiles information from various sources related to police and emergency incidents, taking appropriate actions regarding intrusion, duress, and hold-up alarms.
Directs response and modifies responsible personnel depending on the type of incident or request.
Operates a variety of communications and security equipment, such as computers, multi? frequency radios, multi-line telephone system, and other related peripherals.
Compiles and prepares reports related to events occurring in the operation of the police office for the dissemination of the completed products to various management officials.
Coordinates with various Federal, State & local law enforcement officials for coordination of emergency situations.
Responsible for the orderly flow of communications between the police dispatch center, agency leadership, and the work force.
Operates a variety of communications equipment, telephones, and computer systems to support both routine and emergency operations.
Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts, Holiday and Weekends.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/15/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-5 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-4. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: monitoring and directing police officers response to emergency and non?emergency criminal activity, security and life safety matters, communications, radio dispatching, telephone, fire and security computers systems. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute four (4) years of education above high school in any field for which high school education or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite, for the experience required for the GS-05 level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical, junior college, college or university. (Transcripts Required). OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. To calculate, first divide the number of total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the number of completed semester credits by 30. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. (Transcripts Required)

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work is typically sedentary in nature. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carry of light items such as papers, books, small parts; etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Working on off-tour, rotating shifts or regular overtime may be required.
