This position is located at a Department of Veterans Affairs Medical facility, in Des Moines, Iowa, in the Plumbing shop under the Maintenance and Operations Section in the Engineering Services.

Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. Major duties listed but not limited to: Maintaining, repairing, installing, and modifying complex air conditioning, heating, and ventilating (HVAC) equipment and systems. Building fire alarms, smoke detectors, and duct dampers are integrated into the building control system, which is maintained by the AC Equipment Mechanic. Troubleshoot, diagnose, replace, repair, and evaluate this system and its subsystems and components by use of the computer, multi-meters, logic diagrams, as- built electronic control drawings, electronic schematics, and manufacturer's literature. Performs maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repairs of domestic and commercial refrigeration equipment and systems such as walk-in coolers, refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, ultra-low freezers, water coolers, etc., and a variety of Canteen cafeteria and Nutrition & Food Service main kitchen equipment Lays out, fabricates, and installs sheet metal and ductwork for a variety of air conditioning, heating, and ventilating applications. Maintains and repairs the medical air, oxygen and vacuum systems, including vacuum pumps, air compressors, etc., in accordance with applicable regulations and policies. Physical Requirements: Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weighs up to 50 pounds. Hoists. holders, and pulleys arc operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Makes repairs and installation from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of the system worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, frequently stretching, bending, and kneeling long periods of time. Working Conditions: Usually works inside but is occasionally required to work outside on top of tall buildings during periods of inclement weather, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Uncomfortable facemasks and protective clothing may be occasionally worn when there is a possibility of exposure to hazards, such as toxic refrigerants when making emergency repairs. Mechanic is subject to cuts, bums, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments. Exposure is concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal origins.
