Duties
Major Duties include:
Lead Yosemite National Park's Safety and Wellness program, to inspire a culture of "safety first".
Serves as the principal advisor to the park's superintendent, leadership team, supervisors, and the park's concessionaire.
Manage a complex Safety & Occupational Health & Wellness Program in support of approximately 2,000 park and concession employees and 4.5 million visitors annually.
Directs safety activities and provides safety guidance to supervisors involved in hazardous operations such as blasting, avalanche abatement, hazard tree management, construction, solid and wastewater treatment, high voltage operations, structural fire operations, wildfire and associated aircraft operations, air quality management, wildlife management, trail maintenance, and search and rescue operations which include high angle and swift water conditions.
Plans, organizes and administers a comprehensive program of evaluations, inspections, and employee safety and wellness training sessions.
Ensures data accuracy via use of parkwide safety systems; analyzes data to identify trends and uses data to inform actions.
Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000 foot high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/10/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-13 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: 1) Managing a safety or occupational health program; 2) Developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management; 3) Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements; 4) Developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards; 5) Developing and implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses; 6) Analyzing and evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards; 7) Designing and modifying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems to control or eliminate hazards; 8) Inspecting and surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards; 9) Training of workers, supervisors , managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects; 10) Work in occupational fields such as industrial hygienist, safety engineer, fire prevention engineer, health physicist, and occupational health nurse. You must include hours per week worked.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
