Employee will serve as a Medical Laboratory Technician at the Iowa City VA Health Care System, in Iowa City, IA. The employee serves as a generalist in medical technology with responsibility for performing procedures in the areas of chemistry (including special chemistry and toxicology), hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), microbiology and specimen procurement and processing.
Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Utilize practical knowledge of the techniques of medical laboratory practice in the clinical laboratory work of blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology and the associated biological anatomy analysis.
Perform the setup of cultures, staining of specimens and isolation of bacteria.
Operate the instrumentation that identifies and perform inhibitory concentration analysis on the isolates that are considered pathogenic.
Perform test for blood typing and cross matching and perform antibody identification.
Evaluate and monitor the performance of test procedures both manually and on testing equipment.
Identify unusual test results or discrepancies/conditions that can lead to erroneous results.
Perform phlebotomy and specimen processing using complex instrumentation.
Prepare slides, smears, cultures, etc. of extremely delicate and/or volatile specimens.
Operate instrumentation that performs blood cell testing with the newest methodologies which include impedance testing, flow cytometry and immunochemical staining.
Operate instrumentation for semi-quantitative and quantitative measurements of chemical and cellular constituents in urine specimens.
Utilize information resource technology (i.e., computers, printers, label printers, copy machines, phones, fax machines, various computer information packages, etc.).
Perform related duties as required.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm; 7:00 am - 3:30 pm; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm; 4:00 pm - 12:00 pm; occasional weekends and holidays

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE-GS-7: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in Federal service performing technical medical laboratory support work such as: performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Additional specialized experience includes: processing laboratory specimens using complex instrumentation; ordering laboratory supplies; maintaining laboratory records; and explaining procedures to patients. This experience must be documented in your resume to receive credit.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) You must have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of this position.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) Equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described above that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position.
