This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Naval Engineering Department, Industrial Production Facility, in Portsmouth, VA.

Duties

The purpose of this position is to perform Shipfitting work assignments in support of Base Boston.Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.  Typical work assignments include:- Performs sub-assembling, tacking, and welding of various ship components such as shell plates, frames, watertight and non-watertight bulkheads, deck beams, superstructures, foundations, ladders, pipe rails, and many other items.- Erecting hull components in accordance with centerline, base lines, buttock lines, and water lines, such as struts, shaft tubes, foundations, and other hull appendages.- Performing flame cutting with plasma cutting hand cutting tools and performs tack welding with coated electrode, metallic arc, and gas metal arc processes to erect or repair vessels.- Testing compartment tightness using air testing or ultrasonic testing and performing ultrasonic readings of the thickness of the hull plating.- Identifying, distributing, and balancing workload in accordance with established workflow, skill level, and/or occupational specializations; along with monitoring and reporting on the status and progress of work.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.

Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: * Ability to Lead or Supervise. (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT)* Knowledge of Equipment, Structures, Material, etc.* Ability to interpret instructions, specifications* Layout and Pattern Development* Ability to use hand tools, power tools, etc, for metal work* Dexterity (Assembly, Disassembly, Reassembly etc)National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
