Duties
Provide direct surgical support of a highly specialized nature to patients undergoing surgery, including the newest and most complex, state-of-the-art procedures in multi-specialties in the Operating Room, including robotic surgery.
Select, assemble, and organize required supplies (setup, connect, test, operate drills, saws, etc.) and instruments for surgical procedures.
Prepare and maintain a sterile field.
Select and pass instruments and equipment to the surgeon during surgical procedures by anticipating the surgeon's needs.
Perform sponge, needle and sharps count during various periods of all surgical procedures.
Check patient's chart, surgical consent, and identification band for completeness.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- May require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
- This position may designate as Inclement Weather Essential. You must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. Certifying organization varies on location. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.

Basic Requirements for Operating Room Nursing Assistant GS-06:
Experience required for GS-06: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: providing assistance inside the operating room to members of the surgical team (e.g. surgeon, anesthetist, or registered nurse), preparing an operating room for surgical procedures, such as setting up surgical equipment, supplies, or solutions, setting up and maintaining a sterile field, selecting and passing instruments for operating room procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-06: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Nursing or a related field of study.
OR
Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-06: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
