Duties
This Health Technician (Dietetic) position is located at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI in the Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) Division as the Nutrition Call Center Associate (NCCA). The primary purpose of the position is to provide administrative and customer service support for the Milwaukee Hospital food services program.
Performs routine duties that require exceptional computer skills, proper phone etiquette, proficiency in special dietary procedures, a broad knowledge of routine modified diets, combinations of diet modifications and knowledge of Dietetics software required functions. The incumbent is responsible for handling patient meal service order, answering patient calls using Automatic Call Distributor (ACD) phone system, and entering meal orders into the Dietetics Software computer system.Major Duties:
Practice proper business telephone etiquette while answering phones and use strong listening and speaking skills.
Properly operate telephone equipment by transferring or placing calls on hold.
Contact patients who have missed meals or to take meal order by telephone or personal visit to patient.
Assemble meal tickets in numerical sequence by room and bed number for nursing units.
Retrieve and print computerized information/printouts.
Transfer patient menu preferences and keep Nutrition Call Center stocked with all supplies and file menus.
Handle routine telephonic inquiries regarding patient meal orders, and maintains log of telephonic clinic inquiries/concerns.
Assist in kitchen with delivery of patient/guest trays, restocking room service line, and lining patient trays.
Verify physician order for unusual diets, conflicting modifications, and nutritional supplements.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Morning position (6 am - 2:30 pm) working every other weekend (every other weekend off) and one day off during the week. Some holidays

Physical Requirements: he work requires walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying of light items, such as food trays, instruction materials, books, and manuals. NCC Associate functions require long periods of sitting and moving about in an office environment, including repetitive motion activities of the hands and fingers for extensive keyboard and computer mouse use, and office tasks such as answering and holding a telephone and writing.
The work may require walking indoors, outdoors or to and from other areas of the medical center. It may be necessary to lift and/or push equipment. Incumbent is subject to periods continuous standing, sitting, walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience where you applied knowledge of quantity food service operations, proper nutrition, food items and appropriate quantities; working with clients, patients, and/or, customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; use computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond .
To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-5.
